1

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship is a fully accredited, one-year program intended for residents who are entering their PGY-5 year after successfully completing an ACGME-accredited General Psychiatry Residency. Each year, the program selects three general fellows and one psycho-oncology fellow. The purpose of the fellowship is to immerse fellows in both inpatient and outpatient Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry experiences across three principal training sites, which include the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

1

Training and Experience

Fellowship training includes an extensive range of clinical experiences. Fellows will gain direct exposure to various areas including geriatrics, neurology, oncology, transplants, pain management, HIV, maternal-infant care, integrated care, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and telemedicine. In the inpatient setting, fellows interact with medical students, residents, PhD psychologists, and social workers within an interdisciplinary training framework. This approach emphasizes value-driven medical education, enhancing the fellow's collaborative skills in healthcare settings.

1

Didactic Education

The program integrates several didactic elements, including core fellowship didactics, integrated care didactics, and specialized sessions on Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. The weekly integrated care didactics provide significant instructional hours designed to equip fellows with the tools necessary for effective practice in collaborative care environments. Moreover, key topics in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry are systematically taught, covering areas such as ethical issues, psychological responses to illness, psychopharmacology, and more.

1

Research and Teaching Opportunities

The program fosters a robust culture of research and teaching, with opportunities to contribute to academic publications and to engage in innovative projects under expert supervision. Fellows are introduced to evidence-based practices and are encouraged to leverage their didactic learning in real-world clinical scenarios. This framework supports the development of critical thinking, leadership skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
