University of Washington Program

The University of Washington Pediatric Cardiology Training Program aims to develop highly competent pediatric cardiologists equipped with both the cognitive and procedural expertise necessary to provide exceptional care to children suffering from cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, the program emphasizes the acquisition of academic skills that will enable fellows to contribute meaningfully to the field through scholarly activities.

This training occurs at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where approximately 1,200 residents and fellows undergo ACGME training each year at one of the primary training sites. Seattle Children’s Heart Center serves as the main clinical training site for fellows, offering a robust clinical experience.

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to provide a blend of clinical exposure and research opportunities:

First Year

The first year primarily focuses on clinical training, exposing fellows to all areas of clinical cardiology through month-long rotations. Additionally, fellows partake in a continuity clinic to maintain ongoing patient relationships and care.

Second and Third Years

During the second and third years, fellows concentrate on advancing their research skills while taking on increased clinical responsibilities. This comprehensive training model allows for roughly two years of clinical activities complemented by one year committed to academic endeavors, including clinical research, quality improvement work, teaching, and other educational programs through the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Clinical Exposure

Clinical training encompasses a wide range of specialties, including:

• Inpatient cardiology
• Echocardiography and noninvasive imaging
• Cardiac catheterization
• Electrophysiology
• Cardiac intensive care
• Cardiothoracic surgery
• Heart failure and transplant

This multifaceted clinical exposure is pivotal in preparing fellows for diverse career paths in pediatric cardiology.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are afforded numerous research opportunities, which may encompass clinical, basic science, and transitional research projects. The faculty associated with the Seattle Children’s Research Institute focuses on various pediatric cardiology topics, such as cardiac metabolism, regeneration, Kawasaki disease, bypass hemodynamics, and innovative surgical techniques. Research aims to advance knowledge while addressing issues related to innovation and health equity in pediatric cardiology.

Rotations

The fellowship comprises 39 rotations, including four weeks allocated for vacations and holidays, allowing for a diverse array of clinical experiences. The specific rotation plan can be adjusted based on individual fellows’ interests, ensuring a tailored educational experience.

Application Process

Eligibility requires candidates to have completed at least three years in an ACGME-approved pediatric residency program and to be board certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. Applications are submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and must include a CV, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and proof of USMLE Step or COMLEX scores.

Visa Support

The program is committed to supporting international applicants. It typically sponsors J-1 and H-1B visas, allowing qualified candidates from abroad to pursue fellowship training.

Core Training Sites

Seattle Children’s Hospital serves as the primary clinical training venue, functioning as both a community hospital and a pediatric referral center for the Northwest. The facility accommodates 407 beds and is strategically located near the University of Washington, facilitating seamless coordination between education and clinical practice.

The Heart Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital performs an extensive array of cardiac procedures annually, including over 500 heart surgeries and around 300 heart transplants, reinforcing its status as a leading institution for pediatric cardiology.
