Overview

Program Overview

The Pediatric Urology Fellowship at the University of Washington is a two-year program established in 1990, designed to provide in-depth training in pediatric urology. This fellowship offers an extensive clinical experience, focusing on both complex urologic reconstruction and minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic-assisted laparoscopy, alongside general pediatric urology. The fellowship's structure consists of a clinical emphasis during the first year, followed by a strong research focus in the second year. Fellows gain clinical exposure through Seattle Children’s Hospital, a considerable healthcare facility handling numerous surgical cases and outpatient visits annually.

Clinical & Research Rotations

During the first year, fellows in the program are expected to be highly involved in patient care, participating extensively in the operating room, outpatient clinic, and inpatient units. They receive training in various multidisciplinary clinics which include the Neurodevelopmental Clinic, the Reconstructive Pelvic Medicine Clinic, the Minimally Invasive Surgery/Endourology Clinic, and the Differences in Sexual Development Clinic. In the second year, the fellows concentrate on research activities, dedicating 80% of their time to research while maintaining some clinical responsibilities. This year allows fellows to refine their expertise in specific pediatric urology areas while engaging in mentored research projects that can range from basic science to quality improvement initiatives.

1

Fellowship Structure and Training

The total length of the fellowship is two years with one fellowship position available per year. The program is ACGME-accredited for both years. Fellows are encouraged to engage in research focusing on various themes, including health services, quality improvement, and clinical research. The fellowship requires all participants to design and execute a quality improvement project during their time in the program.

Application Requirements

Prospective candidates for the Pediatric Urology Fellowship must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in urology or an equivalent. The application process entails submitting a curriculum vitae, personal statement, and at least three letters of recommendation. One of these recommendations should ideally come from the applicant's residency program director, attesting to their qualifications and readiness for the fellowship. The application deadline is set for February 1, 2025, with interview dates scheduled for February and March 2025.

1

Competitiveness and Eligibility

The Pediatric Urology Fellowship is regarded as highly competitive. Candidates are expected to have successfully passed all necessary board exams, and those with diverse backgrounds, including D.O.s and IMGs, may find the program to be welcoming, provided they meet all qualifications. There may not be a specific limit on the number of failed USMLE attempts mentioned, but candidates are generally encouraged to have a strong academic record and clinical performance during their residency.

1

Visa Support

The program provides visa sponsorship for international applicants. Typically, the fellowship can sponsor J-1 visas, which are common for non-US citizens participating in graduate medical education. This support allows qualified international candidates to apply and participate in this fellowship opportunity.

1

Faculty and Mentorship

The fellowship includes a robust mentorship system, with closely involved faculty members specializing in pediatric urology. This includes experts in surgical, clinical, and research aspects of pediatric urology. The smaller size of the fellowship allows for individualized instruction and mentorship from faculty members who have a vested interest in developing the skills and expertise of each fellow.

1

Research Opportunities

Research is a significant component of the fellowship, especially in the second year, where fellows have the opportunity to engage in a wide array of pediatric urology research topics. Areas of research may extend to the late effects of childhood malignancy therapy, long-term fertility outcomes, as well as advancements in minimally invasive techniques and patient safety improvements within pediatric urology.
