The University of Washington Pediatric Residency Program, based at Seattle Children's Hospital, aims to educate and inspire exceptional pediatricians through a comprehensive and rigorous training curriculum. With approximately 45 residents per class, the program incorporates a supportive and inclusive environment where trainees can thrive both personally and professionally.

Program Overview

The goal of the program is to produce well-rounded pediatricians equipped to contribute positively to the health and wellbeing of children and their families. Residents experience a blend of inpatient and outpatient medical settings, gaining exposure to a wide range of pediatric conditions from normal development to acute care and critical care rotations.

Training Tracks

The program offers several specialized tracks alongside the categorical track: the Health Equity Track, focusing on training leaders in pediatric health equity; the Alaska Track, tailored to the healthcare needs of rural communities; the Research Track for pediatrician-scientists; and the Pediatric Neurology track for those pursuing careers as pediatric neurologists, among others.

Curriculum and Assessments

The transition to the new X+Y scheduling model starting in the 2025-2026 academic year is designed to enhance resident wellness while ensuring educational needs are met through dedicated clinical experiences. The curriculum emphasizes the development of clinical skills, evidence-based practice, and advocacy in pediatric medicine.

5

Research Opportunities

Research is highly prioritized within the program, allowing residents significant opportunities to engage in projects that align with their interests. The Research Track accommodates individuals with MD/PhD backgrounds, providing protected time dedicated to research endeavors.

8

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

The program is committed to fostering diversity through its Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) initiatives. These efforts seek to create a supportive environment for underrepresented minorities in medicine, focusing on recruitment, retention, and curriculum that promotes health equity. Resident involvement in advocacy work and community outreach is encouraged.

4

Clinical Training Sites

Seattle Children's Hospital serves as the main clinical training site, recognized as the primary pediatric referral center for the surrounding WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho). Additional clinical training occurs at the University of Washington Medical Center—Roosevelt and Harborview Medical Center, providing residents with diverse learning opportunities.

6

Resident Life

The wellness of residents is a cornerstone of the program. There are multiple initiatives in place to foster community and support outside of clinical duties, including regular wellness events, group activities, and mentorship opportunities. The program values the balance between rigorous training and personal life, ensuring residents have a fulfilling residency experience.

9

Application Process

Applicants interested in the UW Pediatric Residency Program must register through the National Resident Matching Program. A complete application typically includes the ERAS application form, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and proof of passage of USMLE Step 1 or equivalent. It is crucial for candidates to have graduated from medical school within the last two years. The program accepts graduates from both US and international medical schools, as long as they meet the specified accreditation and passing criteria.

2

Visa Sponsorship

The University of Washington Pediatric Residency Program sponsors visas for international medical graduates (IMGs). Specific visa types supported include H-1B and J-1 visas, allowing candidates from outside the United States to pursue residency training at this esteemed institution.
