The UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency offers a distinctive training opportunity located in the underserved areas of North Central Pennsylvania. Residents have the chance to engage in comprehensive training across various clinical settings, primarily at UPMC Williamsport, UPMC Wellsboro, and UPMC Cole, across a three-year curriculum.

Program Structure

Initiated in 2023, the UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency includes two residents per year, culminating in six residents at any given time throughout the training program. The first year is primarily spent at UPMC Williamsport, a Level II Trauma Center renowned for its robust family medicine practice. Subsequent years are spent at critical access hospitals, UPMC Wellsboro or UPMC Cole, providing hands-on experiences and nurturing competence in rural family medicine.

Residents can expect active participation in a variety of rotations such as inpatient medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and outpatient care. The program includes 7 months of inpatient medicine, 4 months of inpatient pediatrics, and 4 months of obstetrics in the first year. Thereafter, during the second and third years, additional outpatient and community-focused training takes place alongside elective opportunities.

Curriculum and Training

The curriculum adheres to national accreditation standards while taking into consideration the unique needs of rural medicine. With a focus on a personalized approach, residents can choose specialized electives that align with their career interests, encompassing areas like obstetrics, sports medicine, and geriatrics. Call and Rotations

All residents follow a structured call schedule, participating in weekend calls and night floating during their first year. Second and third-year residents engage in weeknight calls linked to their inpatient rotations. Importantly, the residency does not include night float in the latter years, allowing residents to balance their workload effectively while maintaining quality training.
