The UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency offers a distinctive training opportunity located in the underserved areas of North Central Pennsylvania. Recognized for its mission to cultivate highly skilled and compassionate family physicians, the program addresses the unique healthcare needs of rural communities. Residents have the chance to engage in comprehensive training across various clinical settings, primarily at UPMC Williamsport, UPMC Wellsboro, and UPMC Cole, across a three-year curriculum.

An integral part of the program is its rural focus, where a significant emphasis is placed on comprehensive and preventive care. Rural patients often face numerous health challenges, including higher prevalence rates of chronic diseases and limited access to specialized care. Residents are prepared to encounter these conditions head-on, fostering a deep-rooted connection to their patients and community.

Program Structure

Initiated in 2023, the UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency includes two residents per year, culminating in six residents at any given time throughout the training program. The first year is primarily spent at UPMC Williamsport, a Level II Trauma Center renowned for its robust family medicine practice. Subsequent years are spent at critical access hospitals, UPMC Wellsboro or UPMC Cole, providing hands-on experiences and nurturing competence in rural family medicine.

Residents can expect active participation in a variety of rotations such as inpatient medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and outpatient care. The program includes 7 months of inpatient medicine, 4 months of inpatient pediatrics, and 4 months of obstetrics in the first year. Thereafter, during the second and third years, additional outpatient and community-focused training takes place alongside elective opportunities.

Curriculum and Training

The curriculum adheres to national accreditation standards while taking into consideration the unique needs of rural medicine. With a focus on a personalized approach, residents can choose specialized electives that align with their career interests, encompassing areas like obstetrics, sports medicine, and geriatrics. Training also prioritizes outpatient procedures and the burgeoning fields of telehealth and point-of-care ultrasound, resulting in a well-rounded educational experience for residents.

Call and Rotations

All residents follow a structured call schedule, participating in weekend calls and night floating during their first year. Second and third-year residents engage in weeknight calls linked to their inpatient rotations. Importantly, the residency does not include night float in the latter years, allowing residents to balance their workload effectively while maintaining quality training.

Community Engagement and Mentoring

The residency program fosters a strong connection to the community, encouraging residents to engage in local health initiatives and outreach programs. Residents are often linked with a local family during their training to provide mentorship and enhance their understanding of the rural healthcare landscape.

Benefits and Support

UPMC emphasizes the support provided to residents, which includes a comprehensive benefits package with no premium health, dental, and vision insurance, moving expense assistance, free meals while working, and flexible vacation allowances. Additionally, housing is assured during the second and third years, ensuring that logistics do not detract from the educational experience.

Applications and Competitiveness

The UPMC Rural Family Medicine Residency program is known for being supportive of osteopathic and international medical graduate applicants, aiming to create a diverse training environment. Applicants typically need to satisfy specific criteria, including conditions concerning graduation years and pass rates on the USMLE steps, to ensure a committed and capable residency cohort.

Research and Development Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in research activities, which may involve partnerships with community organizations or scholarly projects aligning with rural health needs. This fieldwork not only augments understanding but also contributes articles or presentations that enrich the broader medical community's engagement with rural healthcare issues.

Visa Sponsorship

The residency program provides visa support for international medical graduates, including but not limited to J-1 and H-1B visa sponsorship. This support ensures that qualified candidates from diverse backgrounds have opportunities to train and offer healing within the communities that greatly need their skills.

Quality Life in North Central Pa.

North Central Pennsylvania is characterized by scenic beauty and outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and winter sports, providing a balance to the rigorous nature of medical training.
