Overview

The Arnot Ogden Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program offers an ACGME-accredited training experience that emphasizes personal development and community engagement. The program is designed to build the necessary skills for residents to excel in both urban and rural healthcare environments. This residency is particularly notable for its Rural Residency Track, catering to those who aim to serve in community-focused settings.

Program Highlights

Residents benefit from an array of program features, including:

  • Personal development funds for continuing medical education (CME).
  • Access to ACLS, PALS, and ATLS training and certification.
  • Participation in the NRMP Match program.

The residency program requires that applicants have completed COMLEX 1 & 2. Furthermore, international medical graduates (IMGs) must possess a green card or be U.S. citizens. For IMGs out of medical school for more than three years, passing scores on USMLE 1, 2, and 3 on the first attempt are mandatory. The program is competitive and welcomes applications from both DOs and IMGs.

Some rotations may also be conducted at affiliated sites, like St. Joseph's Hospital and Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital, providing diverse clinical experiences.

Research Opportunities

The program places a strong emphasis on research, encouraging residents to engage in quality improvement projects. The faculty provides mentorship throughout the research process to help residents develop their investigational skills and contribute to advancing healthcare practices.

Unique Aspects of the Program

A distinctive feature of the family medicine program is its commitment to rural health training, which is increasingly important given the current healthcare landscape. Residents actively participate in caring for communities, gaining practical experience in a rural setting, which often emphasizes a more diverse set of medical conditions.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program does not currently sponsor visas, thereby prioritizing U.S. citizens or permanent residents. It remains competitive, particularly valuing those who have demonstrated a commitment to primary care and community health.1

Application Requirements

To be considered for the program, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Four years or less from medical school graduation.
  • Successful completion of COMLEX examinations and passing scores on required USMLE components are mandatory for IMGs who graduated more than three years prior.

This structured, supportive environment is designed to help residents thrive during their training, promoting excellence in family medicine while allowing a balanced lifestyle amidst the academic rigor of residency.1
