Rochester Regional Health Program

United Memorial Medical Center offers a Family Medicine Residency program designed to cultivate skilled, compassionate, and knowledgeable physicians, primarily in a rural community setting. The program is affiliated with Rochester Regional Health, ensuring residents have access to advanced medical practices and settings.

Program Structure and Curriculum

The curriculum encompasses a comprehensive blend of outpatient and inpatient experiences in Family Medicine. Residents can expect to spend substantial time seeing primary care patients in Batavia, New York, a charming town where they can develop broad clinical skills. Each of the three training years is designed to build competencies progressively, with various electives available to support resident interests.1

Training Environment

As the only residents at the United Memorial Medical Center, residents benefit from low faculty-to-resident ratios, fostering personalized and engaged education. The program encourages residents to enhance their teaching skills by interacting with medical students from local colleges.2

Additionally, although the program is rooted in a rural environment, it provides exposure to urban medical practices through rotations at a tertiary care hospital in Rochester, enhancing exposure to a diverse range of cases and medical practices.3

Visa Support

The program provides support for the application and processing of visas for eligible candidates. It accepts graduates who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents; importantly, it does not sponsor J-1 or H-1B visas, meaning that candidates must possess the appropriate citizenship or residency status prior to application.5

Application Process

Applicants must apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application requires the candidates to have passed Steps 1 and 2 of the COMLEX/USMLE examinations prior to submission of rank orders. Preferences are granted to applicants who are local or have graduated from medical school within the last two years, ensuring a fresh approach to patient care.6

Competitiveness and Special Requirements

The program prides itself on being applicant-friendly, particularly towards DO candidates and international medical graduates (IMGs). While it does not publish strict cutoff scores for board examinations, candidates’ applications will be assessed holistically, considering various aspects such as academic performance, communication skills, personal attributes, and letters of recommendation. Candidates are expected to demonstrate competitive qualities and a sincere interest in Family Medicine.7
