Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium (SVH) Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny Health Network's Forbes Hospital is designed to support the growth of residents into competent, compassionate family physician leaders. With an emphasis on an interdisciplinary team approach and high-quality patient care, the program aims to create a supportive environment that respects diversity and encourages comprehensive care.

Program Overview

The residency program has a total duration of three years (PGY1 to PGY3) and accepts eight residents each year, making a total of 24 residents within the program. It is fully accredited by ACGME with osteopathic recognition. The program is recognized for providing unopposed training opportunities, ensuring that residents get extensive hands-on experience across various aspects of family medicine, including obstetrics, pediatrics, and inpatient care at a single site.

Curriculum

The curriculum integrates medical and behavioral health with a focus on evidence-based practice and leadership development. Residents participate in various specialties like women's health and sports medicine. They follow a structured rotation schedule that reinforces core family medicine skills while allowing flexibility, with eight elective experiences available throughout the residency. The curriculum also includes comprehensive didactic training, with regular sessions scheduled to bolster clinical knowledge.

Elective Opportunities

Electives offered include opportunities in geriatrics, dermatology, global health, addiction medicine, and sports medicine, among others, allowing residents to tailor their education to their interests.

Clinical Rotations

Clinical rotations are organized in 3-week blocks, all centered at Forbes Hospital, except for a 6-week block in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. The call schedule allows residents to manage patients without competing with fellow residents for caseloads. First-year residents generally take on night floats, while second- and third-year residents have a more supervisory role.

In addition to clinical training, residents are engaged with community outreach programs. The diversity of the population served and the community needs present ample opportunities for residents to enhance their learning experiences while making a tangible impact.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The Family Medicine Residency Program at Forbes Hospital is considered moderately competitive. Applicants are expected to have a USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 score of 210 or higher, or COMLEX scores of at least 500. International graduates must also possess hands-on clinical experience in the United States and must be ECFMG certified by the time of application. Additionally, applicants should have graduated from medical school no more than three years prior to application.

Visa Sponsorship

The program offers sponsorship for J1 visas, facilitating entry for international medical graduates who meet the specified criteria. However, applicants are responsible for all related expenses, as there is no provision for observerships or externships.

Support Services

The program emphasizes resident wellness and support. An infrastructure that includes behavioral health support and resident evaluation mechanisms is in place to identify and assist residents in coping with the stresses of residency.

Unique Features

Residents benefit from considerable technology integration, including personal laptops, access to electronic health records (EPIC), and opportunities to participate in telemedicine and specialty clinics focused on diverse areas such as Diabetes and Transgender Care. Unique training modules in lifestyle medicine and geriatrics, along with a focus on community and underserved medicine, further enhance the residency experience.
