Program Overview

The Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at the USA Health program is designed to provide comprehensive training in clinical neurophysiology, with an emphasis on EEG, EMG, and other neurophysiological studies. The program is part of the University of South Alabama's Department of Neurology and is characterized by its dedication to the education and development of highly skilled neurophysiologists.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes a well-rounded range of clinical training aimed at preparing fellows for a successful career in neurophysiology. Training encompasses key areas such as:

• Video-EEG monitoring
• Electromyography (EMG) and evoked potentials (EP)
• Sleep medicine and related studies
• Advanced techniques in neurophysiology, including source localization imaging on EEG
• Participation in pharmacological trials and ICU monitoring

This robust curriculum is designed to ensure that fellows achieve competency in all relevant aspects of clinical neurophysiology, making them well-prepared for clinical practice and board examinations.

Rotations

During the fellowship, fellows will rotate through various clinical settings to gain hands-on experience and exposure to diverse patient populations:

• Clinical Neurophysiology: Fellows will work alongside attending physicians to conduct neurophysiological testing and interpret results.
• EEG lab: Experiences in video-EEG monitoring allow fellows to engage in direct patient care and analysis of EEG data.
• EMG lab: In addition to performing EMG studies, fellows will learn how to evaluate neuromuscular disorders.

Research Opportunities

Research is a key component of the fellowship program, with opportunities for fellows to participate in ongoing clinical trials, quality improvement projects, and scholarly activities. Fellows are encouraged to work closely with faculty mentors in the design, implementation, and dissemination of research findings. Collaborative research projects often lead to presentations at national conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Training Sites

The fellowship training occurs in state-of-the-art facilities:

• USA Health University Hospital: An acute care facility serving as a major referral center, equipped with advanced neuroimaging and monitoring technologies.
• Children’s & Women’s Hospital: Features dedicated pediatric neurology services and expertise.
• Strada Patient Care Center: Home to neurology specialty clinics, this facility is designed to support diverse neurological evaluations and treatments.

Application Process and Requirements

Applicants must submit their applications through ERAS. The program sponsors J-1 visas and does not have strict US clinical experience requirements, welcoming international medical graduates as well. Important aspects of the application include:

• Completion of Medical Degree: Applicants should provide verified transcripts from their medical school.
• Letters of Recommendation: Three letters, ideally from physicians familiar with the candidate's clinical skills and work ethic.
• USMLE Scores: There are no minimum scores stated; however, applicants should have passed STEP 1.
