Welcome to the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute's Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship program. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive education and clinical training experience, preparing fellows for successful careers in hematology and medical oncology. The program is a three-year ACGME-accredited fellowship that accepts two fellows annually.

Program Aims

The primary objective of the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship is to tailor training toward the career interests of each fellow, whether that be in academic medicine or private practice. Emphasis is placed on developing a solid foundation in the treatment of cancer and blood disorders, along with participation in patient-based translational research, quality improvement projects, and active engagement in cancer prevention initiatives.

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship equips physicians with the necessary clinical skills by integrating clinical duties with protected research time. The structure of the program allows flexibility, enabling fellows to customize their rotations based on individual career aspirations. The fellowship includes several types of rotations:

• In-patient Rotation: Direct care of hospitalized patients at USA Health University Hospital.
• Hematology and Medical Oncology Specialties Rotations: This includes specialties like Gastrointestinal Oncology, GU Oncology, Neuro-Oncology, and others.
• Stem Cell Transplant Rotation: Focused training at The University of Alabama.
• Elective Rotations: Opportunities to explore interests further, including advanced imaging, research, and quality improvement initiatives.

Each rotation lasts approximately one month, ensuring extensive exposure to various facets of hematology and oncology.

Research Opportunities

Research is a cornerstone of the fellowship training. First-year fellows engage in an Introduction to Research Series to explore available opportunities. They are required to conduct original research projects and present findings at both local and international conferences while also working towards publication. The training climate fosters mentorship from experienced faculty members dedicated to developing future leaders in the field.

Visa Support

The program is open to international medical graduates and can sponsor J-1 visas for fellows. Visa application support and guidance are provided to help navigate the process.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship is highly competitive. International Medical Graduates are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 exams on their first attempt, ideally with a minimum score of 220, to enhance competitiveness. Additionally, all applicants should be within five years of graduating from medical school and have prior clinical experience in a US-accredited teaching hospital.

The fellowship seeks applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to oncology, a compassionate approach to patient care, and a desire to participate in clinical research. The structured application process engages candidates through ERAS, ensuring a thorough evaluation of every application.
