USA Health Program

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of South Alabama is a rigorous three-year program designed to cultivate academic physicians in the fields of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. This fellowship, based at key teaching facilities such as USA Health University Hospital, Mobile Infirmary, and Providence Hospital, integrates extensive training with diverse clinical exposure to ensure that fellows acquire the necessary skills and knowledge for their future careers.

Educational Program

Fellows are actively involved in the Medical Grand Rounds, daily case conferences, and research progress meetings. A broad spectrum of procedural skills is developed, allowing fellows to gain hands-on experience in flexible bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound-guided biopsies, central line placement, and other advanced critical care procedures.

The program involves extensive research time, enabling fellows to participate in both clinical and basic science research. Research endeavors are supported through the Center for Lung Biology, where fellows collaborate with faculty mentors on projects that align with their academic interests. Each fellow is expected to present their findings at local and international conferences and is encouraged to submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals.

Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Fellowship program sponsors J-1 visas for eligible international medical graduates. All applicants must have completed three years of postgraduate training in an accredited internal medicine program within the United States or Canada. The application process requires submission via ERAS along with comprehensive documentation such as transcripts, recommendation letters, a personal statement, and USMLE scores. Specific eligibility criteria include a maximum of one failed USMLE attempt and completion of medical education within the last five years.
