Vanderbilt University Medical Center Program

The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) offers a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship in Addiction Medicine, specifically designed to deliver a comprehensive educational and clinical training experience. This program is focused on the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of individuals dealing with substance use disorders (SUDs) and substance-related health conditions, including an unhealthy use of substances such as alcohol, prescription medications, and illicit drugs.

Admission to the Addiction Medicine Fellowship is restricted to applicants who have completed a residency in any accredited clinical specialty. Applicants must provide a personal statement reflecting their interests and career goals in Addiction Medicine, standardized data from their curriculum vitae, a current headshot, and scores from USMLE or COMLEX. Additionally, four letters of recommendation are needed, with at least one coming from the residency Program Director. The program does not impose a maximum number of failed USMLE exams but requires that candidates have completed their residency training prior to the fellowship start.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship is crafted to provide a rigorous academic environment. The participants are expected to contribute to SUD-focused education and ameliorate evidence-based SUD care in both individual and community settings through guided scholarship and research endeavors. Each fellow is allotted protected scholarly time equivalent to 10% FTE, aimed at facilitating board preparation, teaching, and academic writing.

The curriculum is closely integrated with the allied Addiction Psychiatry fellowship, fostering collaborative learning opportunities. Components of the curriculum include clinical supervision for outpatient and inpatient consultations, training in various therapeutic approaches including individual and group therapy, and participation in case conferences and journal clubs focusing on emerging literature in addiction medicine.

Clinical Rotations

Fellows engage in a broad spectrum of clinical experiences across multiple training sites, including:

• Addiction consultation services at Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital (VUAH).
• Medically-supervised withdrawal programs and psychiatric stabilization at the Co-Occurring Disorders Unit of Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital (VPH).
• Outpatient high-acuity stabilization at the VISTA Bridge Clinic.
• Longitudinal SUD care in outpatient clinics tailored for individuals with unique needs such as pregnant individuals or those living with HIV.
• Electives that may cover Tobacco Treatment, individual psychotherapy, and chronic pain management, among others.

Faculty and Mentorship

The program boasts a rich faculty composed of experts across various specialties including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and OB/Gynecology. Daily supervision by faculty is a key component of the training framework, with dedicated mentorship occurring biweekly between fellows and program directors.

Research Opportunities

Fellows at VUMC are expected to engage in scholarly projects, with each fellow required to complete at least one publication-quality project as part of their training. Opportunities exist for involvement in quality improvement (QI) initiatives, community-based research, and national conference presentations. The program actively encourages fellows to present their findings to faculty and peers, offering workshops aimed at enhancing academic writing and research skills.

Visa Support

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship program at VUMC offers visa sponsorship for qualified international medical graduates (IMGs), with eligibility for J-1 visa sponsorship. However, H-1B visas are not supported for this fellowship position.

This program is considered highly competitive, attracting candidates from various backgrounds, including both MDs and DOs, as well as IMGs. Success in prior USMLE examinations and fellowship training will be highly regarded.
