Overview
The Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) Gastroenterology Fellowship is a highly regarded, ACGME-accredited 3-year program designed to equip fellows with comprehensive expertise in gastroenterology and hepatology. This fellowship aims to prepare trainees to function independently as GI consultative specialists and qualifies them to apply for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certification in Gastroenterology upon their completion.
1Program Structure
The fellowship encompasses a diverse array of training experiences. Trainees will rotate through both inpatient and outpatient GI and liver consultative services, as well as procedural blocks and the gastric lab. Importantly, fellows will also engage in electives and dedicate time towards research and academic projects. These components are essential for developing a holistic understanding of gastroenterological care.
1Clinical Training
Fellows of VMFH benefit from the extensive clinical exposure provided by the institution's large volume of procedures and patient encounters. The GI section of VMFH is well-established and recognized internationally, with 29 experienced providers conducting thousands of clinic visits monthly and performing over 25,000 endoscopic procedures annually. This includes advanced interventions such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), and balloon-assisted enteroscopy. Trainees can expect to gain substantial clinical knowledge and technical skills through hands-on experience in a busy inpatient GI consultative service catering to a hospital with a capacity of 336 beds.
1Research Opportunities
The program emphasizes research and academic development, featuring a vibrant clinical and translational research agenda. With a commitment to advancing medical knowledge in the field, the fellowship actively participates in numerous clinical trials and is responsible for publishing over 100 papers and abstracts each year. This research involvement provides fellows with the opportunity to engage in meaningful academic pursuits and to contribute to advancements in gastroenterology.
1Location and Training Sites
VMFH serves a diverse patient population, drawing individuals not only from the Greater Seattle area but also from other regions such as Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana, as well as various states across the U.S. This broad patient base enriches the learning environment for fellows. Furthermore, the program benefits from the resources of four large regional medical centers that feature active outpatient endoscopy units located in suburban areas such as Bellevue, Lynnwood, Federal Way, and Issaquah. Some fellows may rotate through these endoscopy centers to gain additional outpatient procedural experience.
1Eligibility and Application Requirements
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must have completed an internal medicine residency program accredited by the ACGME. Candidates should also demonstrate self-motivation, a commitment to continuous improvement, and an interest in academic, teaching, or quality control pursuits. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential for success in the program. It is important to note that applicants must either be U.S. citizens or hold Permanent Residency (green card) status to qualify for admission.
1Visa Support
The program is supportive of international applicants and offers assistance regarding visa sponsorship. Eligible candidates may receive support for visas, including J-1 and H-1B visa types, provided they meet the necessary conditions. This openness to international trainees enhances the diversity of the fellowship cohort, fostering a rich educational environment.
1Competitiveness
The VMFH Gastroenterology Fellowship is recognized as a competitive program. It seeks candidates who are driven, demonstrate a passion for the field, and possess a solid background in internal medicine. Due to its high standards and comprehensive training offered, the program attracts a diverse pool of applicants, including U.S. medical graduates as well as international medical graduates (IMGs).
