Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is a one‑year, ACGME‑approved training program recognized by the American Board of Surgery. The fellowship accepts trainees from General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Anesthesiology after completion of their third postgraduate year.

Surgical critical care focuses on the management of complex surgical and medical problems in critically ill surgical patients. The fellowship provides the academic, clinical, and administrative resources necessary for fellows to develop advanced competence in critical care, prepare to supervise intensive care units, and pursue scholarly activity in the field.

Program Mission: To educate academically oriented, evidence‑based surgical critical care clinicians in an inclusive, diverse, and unbiased learning environment.

Program Overview

The Neurology Residency at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center is a categorical training program in clinical neurology. Under faculty supervision at ARMC and affiliated institutions — including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Fullerton Neurology and Headache Center, and The Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Institute — residents gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient neurology, plus subspecialty care.

Curriculum and Didactics

The didactic program includes morning report, epilepsy and neuromuscular conferences, neuroimaging sessions, a neurology emergencies course, board review, journal club, neurosurgery grand rounds, stroke quality improvement meetings (with resident participation on the stroke committee), and vascular neurology conferences.

PGY‑1 rotations include inpatient internal medicine, clinical neurophysiology (EEG/EMG), inpatient neurology, and outpatient subspecialty clinics. PGY‑2 residents rotate through clinical neurophysiology, headache, inpatient neurology, movement disorders, night float, and outpatient clinics. PGY‑3 trainees assume increasing clinical responsibility with rotations in inpatient neurology, child neurology, electives, headache, movement disorders, and outpatient clinics. PGY‑4 residents serve as chiefs on inpatient services and rotate through clinical neurophysiology, electives, headache, movement disorders, neurosurgery, neurocritical care, outpatient clinics, and psychiatry.

Starting in PGY‑3, trainees may select three electives tailored to career goals or fellowship preparation. Electives include neurology of aging, neuroinfectious disease, neuro‑oncology, neuro‑ophthalmology, neuro‑otology, neuropathology, neurorehabilitation, and pain management.

Residents beginning in PGY‑2 maintain a weekly half‑day continuity clinic in addition to subspecialty clinics. Trainees receive four weeks of vacation annually, scheduled on non‑internal medicine rotations where possible.

To educate neurologists who are clinically competent, compassionate, and prepared for careers in clinical practice or fellowship training in the evolving field of neurology.

Eligibility and Selection

Applicants must apply through ERAS. Qualifications for appointment include:

1. Graduation from an LCME‑accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada; or
2. Graduation from a U.S. college of osteopathic medicine accredited by the AOA; or
3. Graduation from a medical school outside the U.S. and Canada with a currently valid ECFMG certificate prior to appointment.

A complete ERAS application includes:

- ERAS application and personal statement
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Official medical school transcript
- Dean’s letter (MSPE)
- Official USMLE scores (Step 1 and Step 2) or COMLEX Part I, II CE and Part II PE
- Three letters of recommendation (at least two from neurology)
- Recent photograph

Additional IMG requirements:

- Graduation from medical school within the last two years is preferred
- Valid ECFMG certificate prior to appointment if applicable
- ARMC does not sponsor visas
- Minimum six months of U.S. clinical experience (research, observership, or shadowing do not meet this requirement)

The Program Director assesses applicants based on application materials, letters, academic record, publications, board scores, and interpersonal and professional attributes demonstrated during the interview process. Interviews are typically offered in October, November, and December.
