Baylor College of Medicine Program

The Department of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine offers a 12-month ACGME-accredited Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship, providing one position per academic year. This program is designed to train anesthesiologists in advanced clinical care, focusing on both healthy and high-risk parturients.

Fellows will have the opportunity to gain extensive clinical experience in various settings, including a critical one-month rotation at Texas Children’s Hospital, where they will provide anesthesia for fetal surgery cases. This exposure is significant, as Texas Children’s Hospital is renowned for its specialized care.

At Ben Taub Hospital, which is affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, fellows will encounter a comprehensive care environment designated as Maternal Level IV. The hospital handles approximately 3,500 deliveries each year, with a significant proportion of obstetric patients presenting with high-risk conditions such as placenta accreta spectrum, congenital heart disease, and preeclampsia with severe features. The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) has recognized Ben Taub as a Center of Excellence due to the outstanding perinatal care provided there.

Curriculum

The curriculum includes intensive clinical rotations at Ben Taub Hospital’s labor and delivery unit as well as obstetric operating rooms. During the unique one-month rotation at Texas Children’s Hospital, fellows will engage in multidisciplinary conferences related to fetal surgery cases and take part in direct patient care focusing on complex high-risk parturients.

Didactic Learning

Fellows will attend specialized lectures targeting their educational needs, including resident lectures and fellow-level lectures conducted in collaboration with Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellows. Essential training sessions include fetal heart rate assessment courses, Grand Round conferences, and quality assurance meetings.

Research Opportunities

Baylor College of Medicine prioritizes research within this fellowship program. Each fellow is guaranteed protected research time, allowing them to initiate, design, and publish research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors. The program offers numerous educational resources, including classes on study design, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation.

Faculty

The fellowship program is supported by a dynamic team of eight dedicated obstetric anesthesiologists and faculty from various divisions, including Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Neonatology, and Critical Care Medicine. This diverse faculty base ensures a well-rounded educational experience for fellows, aimed at cultivating the next generation of leaders in obstetric anesthesiology.

Application Process

Interested applicants must submit their applications through SF Match. The application process is structured with specific timelines: registration begins in January, and the Rank List submission deadline is in June, followed by match results and post-match vacancies in July. The fellowship starts afterward.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program supports visa sponsorship primarily for J-1 visas, making it accessible for international medical graduates (IMGs) and other applicants looking to advance their careers in anesthesiology within the United States. The program is competitive, welcoming both MD and DO candidates as well as IMGs, given their commitment to nurturing diverse talents.

Special Requirements

Applicants typically need to meet specific eligibility criteria, such as not having more than a limited number of failed STEP exams and ideally being recent graduates to align with the program's focus on fostering new and innovative approaches in obstetric anesthesiology.
