Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center Program

The Eisenhower Army Medical Center General Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to providing five clinical years of surgical training and one dedicated research year to three residents per year. The program aims to develop outstanding surgeon leaders with a focus on providing surgical care in any clinical or military operational setting. The curriculum emphasizes a broad operative training experience, a challenging academic curriculum, and scholarly activities. Residents are encouraged to develop a commitment to lifelong learning and are prepared for independent practice in General Surgery or subspecialty training.

The program's core competencies include Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, and System-based Practice. Residents are expected to successfully balance clinical, academic, administrative, research, and military responsibilities.

The curriculum includes a variety of conferences such as Morbidity & Mortality/Quality Improvement, Preoperative Conference, Tumor Board Conference, Journal Club, and multiple multidisciplinary conferences. Residents also engage in surgical simulation, mock oral boards, cadaver labs, and evidence-based reviews in surgery to enhance their skills and knowledge.

The program boasts a diverse group of core faculty members dedicated to resident education and scholarly activity. Residents come from various backgrounds, fostering a supportive and collegial atmosphere. Resident wellness is a top priority, with social events organized throughout the year to promote camaraderie and well-being.

Annual events include an Intern Welcome Party, Chief's Dinner, Holiday Party, and Fifth Thursday. The research year takes place between the PGY2 and PGY3 years and involves a combination of clinical and basic science research projects. Residents have the opportunity to select research projects aligned with their interests.
