ECU Health Medical Center Program

This Thoracic Surgery Residency Program at ECU Health Medical Center, offered by the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, is a traditional two-year, fully-accredited training program in Cardiothoracic Surgery. The program covers a wide range of educational and clinical activities to train cardiothoracic surgeons comprehensively. It is certified by the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Thoracic Surgery, enabling residents to be eligible for certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery upon completion.

Residents in this program gain experience across cardiac, thoracic, and congenital surgery within both inpatient and outpatient settings. They participate in planning and executing operations, critical care, and post-operative management. The facilities are state-of-the-art, serving a diverse patient population, ensuring exposure to a wide variety of cases and high-volume operative experiences.

The curriculum includes training in various areas such as ischemic and valvular heart diseases, lung and esophageal resections, minimally invasive and robotic adult cardiac surgery, advanced laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, benign and malignant esophageal surgery, advanced aortic surgery, percutaneous valve therapy, mechanical assist devices/ECMO, and advanced endoscopic and bronchoscopic techniques. The program emphasizes quality of care, excellent outcomes, and has a strong national ranking in multiple outcomes databases. Residents have ample opportunities for clinical research, and are encouraged to engage in research activities.
