University of North Carolina Hospitals Program
Thoracic surgery - integrated - Chapel Hill, NC | ACGME Code: 4613611069 | NRMP Code: 1900461C0
The University of North Carolina Hospitals Program offers an Integrated 6-Year Residency Program in Cardiothoracic Surgery. This residency program was established in 2010 and allows residents to enter directly from medical school. The curriculum includes rotations in various specialties such as vascular interventional radiology, endoscopy, cardiology, and endovascular surgery to provide a well-rounded experience. Graduates of the program will be eligible for certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
The advantages of the six-year program include shortening the ABTS certification process by two years and better preparing residents for the complexities and advancements in cardiothoracic surgical care. The program emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach and the mastery of traditional as well as less invasive techniques in treating cardiovascular and thoracic diseases.
Eligible applicants for the program must be a graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the LCME or an international medical school graduate with ECFMG certification. The University of North Carolina Hospitals Program participates in the National Resident Matching Program and only accepts applications through ERAS.
Interviews for the cardiothoracic surgery residency at UNC are typically held on selected dates from November through January. The program aims to train cardiothoracic surgeons with a comprehensive and modern skill set to meet the evolving needs of patient care in this specialty.
