The University of North Carolina (UNC) Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery residency program offers a comprehensive training experience designed to produce well-rounded otolaryngologists, surgeons, and compassionate healthcare providers. The program is structured to provide a diverse and balanced training with extensive clinical and research opportunities. The residency program is five years in duration, but an alternative seven-year path with two lab-based research years supported by an NIH T32 Training Grant is also available for interested applicants.

Residents in the program have the opportunity to train under nationally and world-renowned faculty members covering all subspecialties of Otolaryngology. UNC's Department of Otolaryngology has several labs undertaking innovative research impacting various aspects of the field. A key strength of the program is the high clinical volume at UNC, which serves as the public academic medical center for the people of North Carolina.

Residents are expected to complete a research project during their training, and the program provides opportunities for high-quality research leading to awards and publications. The program has an ACGME accreditation for four residents per postgraduate year.

The curriculum includes rotations in General Surgery, Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery services, and dedicated research time. Residents also gain experience in various subspecialty divisions and have the chance to participate in mission trips such as those organized by the Global Smile Foundation and REI-Vietnam.

Throughout the program, residents engage in a variety of educational activities such as regular didactics, conferences, specialized courses, and national meetings. The clinical faculty at UNC consists of distinguished professors and experts in various fields of Otolaryngology.
