The Duke University Hospital Otolaryngology Residency Program offers two separate tracks: a traditional 5-year track and an NIH R25 surgeon-scientist track. The 5-year program provides comprehensive training in various subspecialties, including benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck, neurotologic surgery, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, maxillofacial trauma, sinus surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and general otolaryngology procedures. Research participation is required throughout the residency.

The program director is Dr. Charles Woodard for the 5-Year Track Program, while Dr. Bradley J. Goldstein leads the NIH R25 Surgeon Scientist Track. The program involves exposure to various areas like Head & Neck Cancer, Otology and Neurotology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Facial Plastics & Reconstruction, Allergy, Laryngology, Rhinology, and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery.

Residents are expected to complete research projects culminating in oral presentations and written manuscripts. They are also encouraged to apply for extramural funding for their major research project. Educational opportunities include cadaveric dissection, skills courses, and lectures held throughout the academic year.

The program emphasizes professional development, collaboration, and leadership qualities. Duke University Hospital also supports resident attendance at meetings to present their research and offers a resident fund for educational purposes. Health, dental, and vision insurance are provided to trainees and their families.

There is a well-rounded curriculum that includes weekly Grand Rounds, subspecialty didactics, and resident teaching conferences.
