Fellowship

The Inova Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is designed as a focused 12-month program intended to equip fellows with the advanced competencies necessary for board certification in surgical critical care. This fellowship is hosted at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, strategically located near Washington, DC, facilitating exposure to a diverse range of clinical cases and educational experiences.

1

The program aims to train fellows in managing critically ill surgical patients, including those requiring complex surgical intervention. It emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, where fellows learn to coordinate comprehensive care in collaboration with a team of healthcare professionals. This will enable them to develop the necessary skills for running surgical critical care units and conducting scholarly activities relevant to their field. Overall, the fellowship fosters leadership competencies through supervised autonomy and educational initiatives targeting residents and medical students.

2

Curriculum

The curriculum is structured to balance both didactic learning and practical, hands-on experience. Fellows receive thorough training in both the basic and clinical sciences associated with surgical diseases, ensuring a strong foundation for advanced practice. Over the course of the fellowship, the educational training includes:*

  • Didactic lectures and seminars focused on procedural skills relevant to surgical critical care.
  • Clinical rotations providing exposure to various surgical specialties.
  • Opportunities for performing and supervising critical care procedures.
2

Rotations

The fellowship comprises a total of 12 months of rotations, consisting of 8 months in the Surgical Critical Care Service and 4 months of electives. The specific breakdown is as follows:

  • Surgical Critical Care Service (STICU): 8 months of intensive critical care experience primarily dealing with trauma, general surgery, vascular, thoracic, transplant, and other surgical cases.
  • Electives: 4 months total, with 2 months in non-ICU settings and 2 months in ICU settings.

During the STICU rotation, fellows manage a patient census of approximately 10 to 20 patients daily, utilizing a hands-on approach to patient care and decision-making. This experience is crucial for developing the competencies needed for independent practice in surgical critical care.

3

Application Process

Applications for the Inova Surgical Critical Care Fellowship are processed through the SAFAS Application Service of the Surgical Critical Care Program Directors Society. Complete applications require:
