Overview

The Nephrology Fellowship Program at Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine is a comprehensive two-year training program that offers a balanced combination of clinical nephrology and research opportunities. The program aims to develop competent nephrologists who are adept in both inpatient and outpatient settings, making it an ideal choice for those looking to build a solid foundation in nephrology.

Program Overview

The Jacobi Nephrology Division is an integral part of the North Bronx Healthcare Network, which is committed to providing quality and publicly accessible healthcare to its community. Two fellows are accepted each year into this program, which emphasizes strong clinical exposure along with opportunities for patient-oriented research. First-year fellows split their time between Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital, providing them with a wide range of experiences while also participating in a continuity ambulatory experience.

In the second year, fellows will have the opportunity to focus on cardiology with a newly introduced Cardio-Renal Clinical Track. This innovative addition allows for expanded exposure in cardiology with a variety of rotations that include cardiology consults and heart failure clinics.

Curriculum Highlights

The fellowship includes diverse clinical rotations designed to provide both depth and breadth in nephrology:

  • First Year: Clinical rotations at Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital, a continuity clinic, and elective research experiences.
  • Second Year: Emphasis on transplant nephrology, including rotations at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center along with additional elective opportunities and a four-month Cardio-Renal exposure.

Fellows will gain hands-on experience in diagnosing and managing acute kidney injury, electrolyte disorders, chronic kidney disease, and performing key nephrology procedures such as kidney biopsies and dialysis.

Educational Conferences

Throughout the fellowship, fellows participate in a mandatory series of educational conferences to enhance learning, which include:

  • Weekly Medicine Grand Rounds
  • Weekly Clinical Conferences
  • Bi-Monthly Journal Clubs
  • Renal Pathology Conferences at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center
  • Core lecture series by faculty

Research Opportunities

The program encourages fellows to engage in research projects, leading to publication and presentation opportunities. Collaboration with faculty from Jacobi Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine enriches the research curriculum, allowing fellows to explore various areas of nephrology.

Visa Sponsorship

The program sponsors both J-1 and H-1B visas, supporting international medical graduates (IMGs) throughout their training period. For H-1B visa candidates, passing USMLE Step 3 is a prerequisite before the match. J-1 applicants must meet eligibility requirements set by ECFMG, including successful completion of USMLE Steps 1 and 2.

Application Requirements

Prospective fellows should note the following application requirements:

  • All USMLE Step exams must be passed on the first attempt.
  • Applicants are required to submit a complete application via ERAS, including USMLE scores and a personal statement.
  • Research experience and clinical exposure is highly advantageous for applicants.

The Nephrology Fellowship at Jacobi Medical Center offers a unique combination of clinical experience, research opportunities, and a supportive educational environment, making it a highly competitive choice for aspiring nephrologists.
