The Cardiology Fellowship Program at Jefferson Health offers a comprehensive training experience in cardiovascular diseases. The program aims to produce highly skilled cardiologists through a variety of educational opportunities including a focus on clinical practice, research, and didactic instruction. With the capacity to perform more than 2,300 cardiac and peripheral catheterizations annually, alongside numerous other procedures including electrophysiology and echocardiography, fellows gain extensive hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. The training program is structured to accommodate a population of five fellows each year and provides specializations beyond the two main tracks, including interventional cardiology and clinical heart failure fellowships. Training opportunities are further bolstered by the affiliation with Jefferson Medical College, allowing fellows to benefit from elective and sub-internship rotations within various specialties.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is designed to ensure fellows acquire both consultation expertise and technical proficiency necessary for cardiologists. The fellowship spans three years, each structured to progressively build competencies in various areas of cardiology.

First Year

In the first year, fellows rotate through core services, which include cardiology consults, cardiac catheterization, non-invasive cardiology, and electrophysiology. This year emphasizes the fundamental skills required for independent practice, including the conduct of echocardiograms and the interpretation of diagnostic results.

Second Year

The second year allows fellows to expand their practical skills further with a focus on advanced echocardiographic techniques, telemedicine, and unit supervision as junior attendings.

Third Year

The final year is dedicated to more autonomous patient care and elective rotations tailored to each fellow's interests. The structure allows fellows to engage in research projects or specialized skills in various facets of cardiology, ensuring they meet certification requirements in areas such as cardiac catheterization, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology.

Research Opportunities

Engagement in a variety of clinical trials and research initiatives is heavily encouraged throughout the fellowship. Under the guidance of a faculty composed of 31 full-time members, fellows can participate in innovative research that enhances their training and includes opportunities to publish and present findings in scholarly forums.

Visa Support and Application Process

The fellowship program offers visa support for international medical graduates and typically sponsors J-1 and H-1B visas. The application process mandates the submission of a detailed ERAS application which includes a medical school transcript, statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. Additionally, candidates must have completed United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) Steps 1, 2, and 3 without any failed attempts exceeding the program’s policy.
