Kettering Health Network Program

The Neurology Residency Program at Kettering Health Dayton is a four-year program that aims to provide comprehensive training in neurological care. The program accepts three residents per year, ensuring a focused and personalized training experience for the participants. Program Structure and Curriculum

The residency training begins with a preparatory year in PGY1, focusing on essential internal medicine and additional specialties such as cardiology and emergency medicine. This foundational year includes major rotations, including 4 months on the neurology inpatient service and a month in sleep medicine. The residents will also spend a month in psychiatry, which complements their understanding of neurological conditions.

As residents progress into PGY2, they immerse themselves more deeply into hospital neurology. Responsibilities during this year include running the inpatient services, supervising junior residents, and engaging actively in the stroke team operations, including telemedicine consultations. A significant rotation on the epilepsy service, which involves learning EEG interpretation and managing epilepsy patients, is a highlight of this year.

PGY3 focuses on EMG services along with pediatric neurology rotations, where residents develop skills necessary for managing neurological conditions in children. This year, residents participate in a child neurology journal club and an additional monthly didactic session related to child neuroradiology, enhancing their ability to integrate knowledge across different domains of neurology.

The final year or PGY4 includes advanced training in neuropathology, solidifying the understanding of neurological diseases at a scientific and clinical level. The program emphasizes outpatient care, with seniors managing their patient panels while also preparing for practice by understanding the business aspects of medicine and honing senior project skills.

Clinical Rotations and Training Sites

Residents engage in clinical rotations across Kettering Health Dayton and the Kettering Health Main Campus. These settings include high-volume patient interactions for acute stroke evaluations and inpatient neurology management.

Additionally, residents gain practical experience at the Cassano Neurology Clinic, focusing on the needs of underserved populations in Dayton. Throughout the residency, there are opportunities to work closely with other medical professionals and learn the intricacies of multidisciplinary patient management.

Research and Academic Opportunities

The program integrates research into the residents' training, with ongoing clinical research projects in both ambulatory and hospital settings. Monthly didactics cover critical topics in clinical neurology, EEG interpretation, EMG procedures, case presentations, journal clubs, and a formal board review series led by senior residents.

Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements

The program currently does not provide visa sponsorship for international medical graduates. Candidates may be evaluated on a range of application metrics, including passed examinations on the first attempt for USMLE or COMLEX. The program is seen as competitive, welcoming both MD and DO applicants, and particularly values residents who demonstrate a commitment to community-focused care.
