1580180A0The Neurology Residency at St. Vincent Medical Center is a rigorous three-year program designed to provide residents with a comprehensive educational and clinical experience in neurology. This program emphasizes the development of competent neurologists who are well-prepared to handle a wide range of neurological diseases in a supportive, academic, and community setting. Continuous faculty involvement and supervision ensure residents receive the necessary mentoring throughout their training.
As part of the training experience, the residency includes a preparatory internship year, leading to the completion of all required training within a total of four years. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and currently accepts four residents per year.
Curriculum and Rotations
The curriculum is structured to include various rotations, allowing residents to gain extensive hands-on experience across different aspects of neurology. The rotation schedule is as follows:
- PGY-2: 6 months in Neuro ICU, 2 months in General Neurology/Inpatient Consults, 1 month Night Float, 1 month in Subspecialty Clinic, and 1 elective.
- PGY-3: 1 month in Pediatric Neurology, 1 month Psychiatry, 5 months Night Float, 5 months Neuroradiology, 1 month EMG/EEG, and 3 electives.

Research Opportunities
Residents are encouraged to engage in research and scholarly activity as part of their training. The program provides infrastructure support including research coordinators and statistical assistance for clinical trials and investigative studies. A Journal Club is also hosted on a bi-monthly basis, allowing residents to discuss and critique recent advancements in neurology.
Unique Aspects of the Program
One distinctive feature of this residency program is its access to cutting-edge facilities, including a Neuro-Intensive Care Unit staffed by fellowship-trained vestibular neurologists, and biplane neuro-angiography rooms that support an active Interventional Neurology program. Additionally, the program is equipped with one of only five Mobile Stroke Units in the nation, operational 24/7, which enhances the real-world training experience for residents.
Benefits for Residents
The residency offers a competitive salary structure and benefits package. Residents in PGY-2 earn approximately $63,963, PGY-3 earn about $66,142, and PGY-4 residents receive $68,636, along with a $2,000 annual education stipend and various health coverage options. Other perks include a relocation stipend, paid time off, and professional liability coverage.
Application Process and Competitiveness
Applicants to the Neurology residency program are required to submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Specific documentation includes a Dean's letter, transcript, three letters of recommendation, USMLE scores, a curriculum vitae, and a personal statement. While the program welcomes International Medical Graduates (IMGs), they are required to have a valid ECFMG certificate by the match date, with strict adherence to all other application requirements. Preference is given to candidates who successfully pass Step 1 and Step 2 exams on their first attempt, although candidates with two attempts may still be considered.
The program offers J-1 visa sponsorship for international applicants and will evaluate H-1B visa sponsorship on a case-by-case basis for exceptional candidates. Due to the quality of training and resources available, admission to the program is highly competitive.12345678910
