Residency Advisor

The Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program is a four-year training program designed to educate and cultivate skilled obstetricians and gynecologists. This program focuses on comprehensive patient care, emphasizing community and population health, as well as serving the underserved populations. The residency is situated within a tertiary care facility that offers a broad spectrum of clinical experiences, making it well-suited for training in obstetrics and gynecology.

The residency is accredited and has a total of 16 approved resident positions, accepting four new residents each year. High-risk obstetrical patients are primarily managed by OBGYN residents while working closely with in-house attending physicians as well as those specializing in maternal-fetal medicine. This interaction enhances the residents' learning experience and exposure to complex cases.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is based on a structured 13-block academic rotation schedule, alongside a night float system that operates from Sunday night through Thursday night. Each year includes various rotations that expand resident skills in numerous modalities:

  • PGY1: Rotations include Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Labor and Delivery, General Surgery, Intensive Care Unit, and Emergency Medicine.
  • PGY2: Further exposure occurs in Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Surgery, Family Planning, and additional Labor and Delivery blocks.
  • PGY3: Residents engage in Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Gynecologic Surgery, Labor and Delivery, and elective rotations.
  • PGY4: The final year focuses on advanced Urogynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, and Gynecologic Surgery, as well as Labor and Delivery.

In addition to clinical rotations, the program incorporates a comprehensive didactic curriculum, featuring weekly educational sessions, Grand Rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, and simulation training. Access to specialized training in robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques through the da Vinci system is a notable asset of the program, promoting advanced surgical readiness.

Research Opportunities

Resident involvement in research is integral to the curriculum. Each resident is expected to participate in a Quality Improvement project and is encouraged to engage in additional research. The program provides access to statistical expertise and research support, ensuring residents are well-equipped to present at academic conferences and contribute to valuable publications.

Application Process and Requirements

The application process requires candidates to utilize the Residency CAS system. The deadline for applications is set annually for November 1. Applicants must include essential documents such as an official Dean’s letter, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, CV, medical school transcripts, and USMLE or COMLEX test scores. It is noteworthy that candidates who have failed any of these exams will not be considered for the program.

Eligibility criteria encompass graduates of MD or DO programs within the last five years, U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or those able to obtain relevant visas. International medical graduates (IMGs) should hold valid ECFMG certification and must have U.S. healthcare experience. Preferred visa types for applications are H-1B visas, with J-1 visas available on a limited, case-by-case basis for select candidates.
