Mercy St Vincent Medical Center/Mercy Health Partners Program
Overview
The Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center Transitional Year residency program is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to offer a well-rounded clinical experience, primarily based at St. Charles Hospital, a community teaching hospital of high standards. This program admits eight residents annually and aims to provide exceptional education and training in a supportive environment.
Program Overview
The transitional year residency program integrates various clinical experiences through collaborations with Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine residency programs. With a commitment to achieving high educational standards, the program emphasizes hands-on learning and is designed to prepare residents for their future specialty training. The program's history reflects a strong tradition of excellence, having graduated over 200 residents across multiple specialties over the years.
1Curriculum and Rotations
The learning structure at Mercy Health is supported by dedicated faculty and staff who foster a supportive training atmosphere. The curriculum includes:
- Daily teaching rounds and medical conferences
- ACLS certification courses
- Comprehensive library resources and facilities
- Workshops focused on clinical skills and research
- Journal clubs
- Monthly morbidity and mortality, patient safety, and quality improvement conferences
All rotations are conducted under the close supervision of experienced physicians, ensuring a balanced educational service experience. Residents will partake in various rotations tailored to enhance their clinical skills and deepen their understanding of patient care.
7Application Process
Applications to the program are accepted exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and are non-negotiable, meaning no paper or email applications will be reviewed. Candidates must fulfill specific eligibility criteria, including being a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or able to obtain a visa.
The basic requirements for applying include:
- Must be a graduate (or on track to graduate) with an MD or DO degree within the past two years.
- International medical graduates should have valid ECFMG certification.
- Passing scores on USMLE or COMLEX, with a preference for first-time attempts.
- All applications must include an Official Dean’s Letter, CV, personal statement, medical school transcripts, and letters of recommendation.
Special consideration is given to applicants with U.S. healthcare experience. For H1-B Visa applicants, evidence of passing Step 3 by the start date of employment is mandatory. J-1 Visas may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
10Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center Transitional Year residency program is highly competitive. Applicants are generally expected to have strong academic backgrounds, with particular emphasis on board scores and U.S. healthcare experience. Candidates who have failed steps of the USMLE or COMLEX are ineligible for consideration. The program encourages strong applications from both D.O. and IMG candidates.
11Visa Support
The program primarily sponsors H-1B visas, preferring this over other visa types due to its broader acceptance for international graduates seeking residency positions. J-1 visas are offered on a very limited basis and considered only in exceptional circumstances.
10Compensation and Benefits
In the 2024-2025 academic year, residents will receive a competitive salary of $63,650 along with an educational sign-on bonus of $2,500. They are also entitled to:
