Loyola University Medical Center Program

The Vascular Surgery Residency program at Loyola University Medical Center offers a five-year integrated vascular surgery residency (0+5) and a traditional two-year fellowship (5+2), all of which are ACGME accredited. The program provides comprehensive training covering the entire spectrum of arterial and venous diseases, including non-operative care, open surgical procedures, and endovascular management.

Trainees at Loyola Medicine have the opportunity to be exposed to various practice settings and pathologies through rotations at Loyola University Medical Center, Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, and MacNeal Hospital.

The program places an emphasis on developing skills in endovascular techniques, open surgical procedures, noninvasive vascular laboratory practices, and involvement in clinical research projects. Trainees are expected to present or publish one research project per year of training.

The integrated vascular residents are rotated through different hospitals to enhance their clinical experience, and they are actively involved in both inpatient and outpatient care, including pre and post-operative care, surgical procedures, and supervising medical students and surgery residents.

Residents are actively encouraged to participate in conferences organized by the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy and the Department of Surgery, as well as engage in discussions on vascular topics and clinical case presentations.

At Loyola University Medical Center, the dedicated time in the vascular ultrasound lab enables trainees to observe, perform, and interpret arterial and venous exams, preparing them for the Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) exam.

Feedback is consistently provided through faculty evaluations, and trainees have access to vascular meetings, simulation exercises, and mock oral board examinations to guide their progress.

The program ensures a well-rounded training experience covering inpatient and outpatient care for patients with arterial and venous diseases, management of surgical emergencies, and the application of both open and endovascular intervention techniques.
