Medical College of Georgia Program

The General Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), part of Augusta University, is a comprehensive three-year program designed to cultivate the necessary skills for leadership roles in both academic and clinical practice within the field of cardiovascular medicine. The fellowship accommodates 5 positions annually, supporting a total of 15 fellows in various stages of their training. This program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in cardiovascular disease.

Fellows in the program benefit from a tailored training continuum that caters to individual career aspirations, involving a mix of intensive clinical exposure in diverse settings and opportunities for basic and clinical research. Augusta University Health serves as the primary training site—a 520-bed tertiary care center equipped with a state-of-the-art cardiovascular intensive care unit, where fellows encounter a high volume of complex and varied pathological cases. This breadth of exposure prepares fellows not just as doctors but as future leaders in the cardiovascular field.

The curriculum has been meticulously structured to meet the American College of Cardiology's Core Cardiovascular Training Statement (COCATS) requirements. It includes core training in coronary angiography, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology at level two certification. The program allows flexibility, empowering fellows to customize their education paths with electives in advanced imaging including CT and CMR, structural interventions, cardio-oncology, and preventive cardiology, among others.

Furthermore, the rotations offer a well-rounded experience, primarily conducted at Augusta University Health with supplementary exposure at the adjacent Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, a 400-bed facility that further enriches the fellows' training experience.
