Medical College of Georgia Program

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is dedicated to producing well-rounded perinatologists who can provide exceptional clinical care for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. This fellowship is unique as it is the only approved Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship in the state of Georgia that includes in-utero fetal therapy training, making it a distinctive opportunity for those aspiring to specialize in this field.

This fellowship program spans three years, with one fellow position available each year. The objective is to prepare fellows to manage and treat complex obstetric cases effectively.

Training Environment

The program is integrated within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and benefits from the strong infrastructure provided by Wellstar MCG Health, a Level IV designated Regional Perinatal Center. This center houses the only facility in Georgia capable of offering comprehensive pediatric subspecialty services all under one roof, thereby enhancing the training experience for fellows.

Program Leadership

The leadership team for the fellowship comprises experienced professionals in the field of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Key leaders include the Section Chief, the Fellowship Program Director, and several professors who mentor and guide the fellows throughout their training.

Application Requirements

Prospective applicants must submit their applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), with a deadline being April 28, 2024, for positions beginning August 1, 2025. It is important to note that candidates must be either US citizens or permanent residents (green card holders) and must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the start date of the fellowship. Due to funding limitations, the program does not accept H1B or J1 visa holders.

The application must include several critical components: a Common Application Form (CAF) through MyERAS, a personal statement, official medical school transcripts, a Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), USMLE transcripts, a recent photo, and three letters of recommendation. The first letter must be from the department chair, the second from the residency program director formatted per the Program Director's Standard Letter of Evaluation (PD SLOE), and the third from the Director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the applicant’s department. A fourth letter is optional and can be from any individual the applicant chooses. Additionally, applicants should email their Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) scores to the program for consideration.

Interview Process

Interviews for selected applicants are conducted virtually via Zoom, and candidates will be notified if they are selected to interview starting May 20, 2024. Interview dates will be announced closer to the time.

Competitiveness and Visa Support

The program is highly competitive, with limited positions available each year, making it essential for applicants to present a strong candidacy. Furthermore, the fellowship does not support visa types such as H1B or J1, ensuring that all candidates meet the strict citizenship or residency criteria.
