Medical College of Georgia Program

The Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Georgia is designed to enhance the training of primary care physicians in the field of sports and exercise medicine. This 12-month accredited fellowship accepts one fellow each academic year and is specifically targeted at physicians who have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited residency in family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics. Graduates of the program become eligible for the Certificate of Added Qualification or Sub-specialty Certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine from their respective primary specialty board, such as the American Board of Family Medicine or the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Clinical Experience

Fellows actively participate in Augusta University sports coverage as team physicians, providing immediate support to athletic trainers and ensuring the overall health and well-being of athletes. They serve multiple roles such as providing medical coverage at various sporting events, highlighting the hands-on experience the fellows will receive throughout the fellowship.

High School Sports Coverage

In addition to collegiate athletics, fellows are responsible for covering athletic events at local high schools, including serving as the team physician for Josey High School. This aspect of the program includes providing on-site medical support during games, particularly for football, as well as conducting injury clinics throughout the school year.

Ultrasound Training

Fellows will gain extensive training in the use of ultrasound for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. This training will occur regularly and is applicable in diverse settings, such as the Family Medicine Center and orthopedic clinics. The incorporation of ultrasound technology into the curriculum enhances the fellows' skill sets, making them proficient in modern medical techniques relevant to sports medicine.

Community Engagement through Events

The fellowship includes participation in significant community events, such as the Augusta Half Iron Man and the USA Collegiate Road National Championship. Fellows will assist by staffing medical tents at these events and responding to acute medical situations involving athletes. This not only allows them to apply their medical training but also serves to connect them with the local athletic community.

Competitiveness and Eligibility

The program is moderately competitive; it is suitable for both U.S. graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs), particularly those who meet the specific eligibility requirements. Applicants should have completed their residency within a defined time frame and may be subject to limitations regarding failed STEP exams, emphasizing the program's commitment to maintaining a high standard among its fellows.

Visa Support

The program offers visa sponsorship for international applicants, including the possibility of providing both J-1 and H-1B visas, facilitating the participation of qualified international medical graduates.
