Overview

New York Medical College at Saint Joseph’s Medical Center offers a Family Medicine Residency Program positioned in Yonkers, New York. This program is affiliated with a modern community hospital, which prides itself on providing quality healthcare and exceptional educational opportunities. With over 40 years of experience in serving a diverse urban population, the program emphasizes hands-on training with an atmosphere of support and shared learning.

Program Overview

At the core of the program's educational curriculum is the commitment to the health and well-being of the local community. The Family Health Center, which operates as part of the training site, logs over 30,000 patient visits annually, allowing residents extensive exposure to a range of cases and experiences. The support from faculty promotes self-directed learning and professional development, fostering strong relationships across educational and clinical aspects.

1

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to equip residents with essential competencies grounded in the ACGME's six core competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Professionalism, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement, Systems-Based Practice, and Interpersonal Communication. Rotations are organized in a block system tailored per year, ensuring exposure across various specialties. A notable feature is the two-week Community Medicine Rotation available in the first year, allowing residents to engage with public health directly.

Didactic Training

Daily didactics include Board preparation, core presentations, journal clubs, and patient rounds. A longitudinal behavioral medicine curriculum addressing Resident Well-Being supports the mental health and wellness of residents throughout training.

3

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in scholarly activities, which may include performance improvement projects or original research under the guidance of faculty members. Opportunities to present findings at the NYMC Family and Community Medicine Research Day further enrich the academic experience.

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

The Family Medicine Residency Program values diversity among its applicants. MD and DO graduates must apply via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and submit several documents including a personal statement, medical school transcripts, a Dean's letter, three letters of recommendation, and proof of passing USMLE steps 1 and 2. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must possess a current ECFMG certificate, have passed USMLE steps 1 and 2, and provide documentation for Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA).

While the program is notably competitive, it remains welcoming to both DO graduates and international medical graduates, maintaining a diverse cohort of residents. The program does not provide visa sponsorship and mandates that applicants must establish their work authorization independently.

5

Benefits and Support

The residency offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical and dental coverage, malpractice insurance, life and disability insurance, paid time off for vacation and conferences, as well as professional development support. While living accommodations are not explicitly provided, assistance for networking among residents to find suitable housing is available. In addition, residents receive essential medical toolkits such as scrubs and white coats.

2

Life in Yonkers

Living in Yonkers provides residents with a vibrant and culturally diverse environment. The blend of urban and suburban life fosters a supportive community for both personal and professional development in residency.

7

Residents' Perspectives

Resident feedback illustrates a strong sense of camaraderie and support. Many express gratitude for the family-like atmosphere that characterizes the residency program, noting the collaborative relationships among residents and faculty, which foster both personal and professional growth.
