BronxCare Health System Program
Overview
BronxCare Health System offers a comprehensive Family Medicine Residency Program designed to train competent and compassionate family medicine physicians. The program accommodates 16 residents annually, along with a Transitional Year Program that includes five residents. The curriculum focuses on high-quality education and extensive clinical experience through various outpatient practices and inpatient services under the mentorship of over 30 attending physicians. This rigorous and structured approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to serve as advocates for their patients and families within the community.
The program places a strong emphasis on preparing residents for community-based primary care, particularly within the underserved South Bronx community. This commitment is evident in the program’s mission to cultivate healthcare advocates who can navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and respond effectively to the needs of the family unit. By the end of the residency, physicians acquire essential skills in judgment, research, and case management crucial for thriving in diverse clinical environments 1.
Curriculum and Rotations
Residents engage in a variety of rotations across different clinical disciplines. The first year (PGY-1) includes rotations in inpatient obstetrics, newborn nursery, neurology, pediatric inpatient care, pediatric emergency, and outpatient clinics, as well as behavioral health. In the second year (PGY-2), residents focus on pediatrics, inpatient units, musculoskeletal issues, electives, intensive care, gynecology, and obstetrics. The third year (PGY-3) includes sub-specialty rotations such as ENT, urology, cardiology, dermatology, and emergency medicine, along with outpatient clinics and elective options. This progressive structure is designed to enhance clinical knowledge and practical experience over the three-year residency period 4.
Transitional Year Program
The Transitional Year Program at BronxCare is structured to provide residents with the foundational training necessary to excel as competent clinicians. This one-year program integrates various clinical experiences that prepare residents to understand and address both healthcare and non-healthcare needs of patients. Participants in this program receive broad exposure to various aspects of patient care, thereby fostering the essential skills needed for family medicine 5.
Elective Opportunities
Residents have the opportunity to choose from an extensive list of elective rotations that includes anesthesiology, behavioral science, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, integrative health, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, radiology, urology, and women’s health 3. This flexibility allows residents to tailor their training experience to align with their personal interests and career aspirations.
Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The Family Medicine Residency Program is recognized as highly competitive within the field of family medicine. It maintains a strong commitment to diversity and inclusivity, welcoming applications from DO students and International Medical Graduates (IMGs).
