The Family Medicine Residency Program at Glen Cove Hospital is dedicated to developing compassionate and proficient family physicians. The program traces its origins back to 1973, emerging as one of the earliest family medicine residencies in the region. Its primary goals include equipping residents with the competencies required for successful certification by the American Board of Family Medicine and fostering a foundation for lifelong learning and community service.

The residency operates in a 7-7-7 structure, thereby providing residents with a rounded experience in family medicine. As an unopposed program, it assures ample opportunities for hands-on clinical experience right from the onset of training.

With more than 230 alumni—many of whom still practice on Long Island—the program emphasizes community involvement, with modern facilities and easy access to tertiary care available through Northwell Health. The primary educational venue lies within the Glen Cove Campus, with Huntington Hospital facilitating most initial inpatient rotations.

Family Medicine Center Resources

The Glen Cove Family Medicine Center (FMC) serves as a Level III Patient Centered Medical Home and is equipped with 18 examination rooms, a procedure room, a colposcopy room, and educational facilities including an electronic library. The center is supported by a dedicated team composed of registered nurses, case managers, social workers, and behavioral health professionals. Collectively, they handle approximately 13,000 patient visits annually and provide vital teaching support to residents.

Clinical and Elective Experiences

Residents engage in diverse clinical experiences, including rotations across various specialties such as pediatrics, obstetrics, and surgery. They also partake in continuity care units designed to reinforce ongoing patient relationships and experience in managing chronic health conditions. Furthermore, elective experiences spanning 24 weeks allow residents to tailor their training to personal interests, thus enriching their exposure and learning potential.

Research and Scholarly Activities

Residents are expected to engage actively in academic research, with a mandate to complete at least one research project and a quality assurance project prior to graduation. The program encourages participation in research networks such as the Family Medicine Investigative Network (FPIN) and provides mentorship through senior faculty members who specialize in research and scholarly activities.

Application Process and Requirements

Applicants are expected to submit a comprehensive application through ERAS, which includes a common application form, curriculum vitae, and standardized test scores. Ideal candidates should have completed medical school within the last five years and usually maintain average scores of 210 or higher on USMLE Step 1 and Step 2. Applications are reviewed from September to January with interview invitations extended to approximately sixty candidates each cycle.
