Northeast Georgia Medical Center Program

The Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) offers a specialized Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine that aims to train compassionate and evidence-based specialists in managing serious illnesses across the continuum of care. This fellowship program is designed for physicians looking to deepen their skills in a multidisciplinary approach to palliative care, working collaboratively within a team that focuses on both hospice and palliative medicine.

The program is not accepting applications during the 2024 match cycle, but prospective candidates are encouraged to check back for updates regarding the 2025 cycle. The fellowship emphasizes a one-year intensive training experience, equipping fellows with the necessary skills and knowledge to become proficient in managing end-of-life care and symptom management for patients and their families.

Curriculum

The Fellowship curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive hands-on training in various palliative and hospice care settings. It emphasizes team-based care and includes a mixture of required and elective rotations, which are organized as follows:

• 6 months Inpatient Palliative Consult Service
• 2 months Inpatient Hospice and Palliative Unit
• 1 month Ambulatory Palliative Care Clinic
• 3 months of electives in various specialties including Geriatrics, Medical Oncology, Palliative Care, and Pain Management.

Furthermore, the educational experience is enriched through lectures, journal clubs, and symposiums focused on continuing medical education to keep fellows up to date on the latest advancements in palliative medicine.

Training Sites

The program offers training opportunities across multiple sites within the Northeast Georgia region, notably at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville and Braselton. The fellows work at dedicated hospice inpatient units and outpatient services, ensuring exposure to a variety of clinical scenarios and patient populations.

Research and Quality Improvement

Research plays a vital role in the fellowship, allowing fellows to engage in quality improvement projects that benefit patient care. The fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing research initiatives as well as present findings at symposiums and academic gatherings.
