Overview

The Hospice & Palliative Medicine Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a one-year ACGME-accredited program that has been a leader in palliative care training since its inception in 2000. The program is designed to train physicians to become leaders in the field, having already educated nearly 60 fellows from various backgrounds including those directly after residency and mid-career professionals. The fellows receive a comprehensive education through a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on palliative care conducted at UAB Hospitals, the Birmingham VA Medical Center, and Children’s of Alabama.1

Fellowship Experience

Fellows participate in an extensive training program that includes outpatient experiences through several clinics. These clinics encompass telehealth and home-based palliative care while fostering partnerships with local hospices and long-term care facilities. Such diversity ensures that fellows are well-equipped to practice in various settings—be it inpatient, ambulatory, or hospice care—by dedicating one day each week year-round to outpatient practice. Additionally, fellows alternate between continuity clinics, home-based palliative care, and provide leadership as assistant medical directors with hospice partners.1

Clinical Training

The program offers three adult-track positions and one combined clinician position (e.g., Med-Peds or Family Medicine). Fellows benefit from clinical training that is supplemented with weekly didactic sessions where readings from significant texts and key articles in palliative medicine are discussed. The fellowship also includes opportunities to attend Grand Rounds across multiple specialties.1

Research Opportunities

Fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects, with protected time allocated for learning from faculty and peers. Training in research methodology and quality improvement is part of the curriculum, equipping fellows with the skills necessary for conducting meaningful research in palliative care.1

Application Requirements

Applications are accepted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), which requires a current CV, medical school transcripts, a dean's letter, and a total of three letters of recommendation including one from a former program director. Applicants must also provide a certificate verifying previous residency training and be eligible for an Alabama Medical License. Furthermore, they must meet the criteria for Federal DEA registration and possess a valid ECFMG Certificate if they are international medical graduates (IMGs). Notably, there is no mandatory minimum USMLE score; rather, the entire application is evaluated holistically.1

Salaries and Benefits

Fellows in the program receive benefits and insurance plans offered to all UAB fellows, with details available on the specific fellow salary structure based on PGY level.1

Visa Support

The program supports J1 and H1B visa sponsorship, accommodating international medical graduates aiming to further their training in palliative care.1
