Welcome to the Department of Pathology at Danbury Hospital, which offers a robust Pathology Residency Program that integrates both anatomical and clinical pathology training. This program is characterized by a family-oriented, community-based approach, with a total of 8-10 residents. The faculty members are dedicated to teaching and mentoring residents while emphasizing residents' well-being. As part of the Nuvance Health Network, which is affiliated with the University of Vermont College of Medicine, this residency program plays a critical role in both academic and clinical facets of hospital services.

Danbury Hospital, with its 371 beds, provides residents with opportunities to manage a diverse range of cases and participate in comprehensive training across several subspecialties. The residency curriculum stands out with its integrated AP/CP format, allowing residents to gain significant exposure through various rotations. Residents engage in patient care, teaching rounds, and participate in multiple conferences, enhancing their learning experience.

During the program, residents will have opportunities to rotate in subspecialty training areas, such as Pediatrics, Neuropathology, and Renal Pathology at Yale New Haven Hospital. Additional training includes Forensic Pathology and Toxicology at the Office of the Medical Examiner in Farmington, along with Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine at Yale School of Laboratory Medicine. Moreover, residents are encouraged to select elective rotations to explore subspecialties of specific interest.

Curriculum Structure

The residency curriculum encompasses both Anatomical and Clinical Pathology and is structured as follows:

Anatomic Pathology Curriculum

The training consists of essential components, including: Orientation in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology (8 weeks combined), Autopsy Pathology, Surgical Pathology, and Cytology (3 months across two PGY years). Other unique educational experiences include required rotations in Forensic Pathology, Neuro, and Pediatric Pathology at Yale University. Residents also engage in dedicated months for the Anatomical Pathology Hot Seat during their final year to prepare them for fellowships and future careers.

Clinical Pathology Curriculum

The Clinical Pathology training spans over 19 months, integrating laboratory management, microbiology, chemical pathology, hematopathology, immunology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology and coagulation. This structured training ensures a comprehensive understanding of clinical principles and laboratory data application to clinical problems. Individual training in areas of interest is encouraged through elective month arrangements.

Research Opportunities and Global Health

The program emphasizes the importance of research, with residents participating in projects that contribute to their academic growth. The program also includes a global health initiative, fostering exchanges with international trainees, such as Ugandan Pathology residents. This program enhancement enriches the residents' perspectives and experiences while contributing to advancements in pathology education across borders.
