Riverside Medical Center Program

The Gastroenterology Fellowship at Riverside Medical Center offers a comprehensive training experience for aspiring gastroenterologists. The program is designed to provide an immersive environment where fellows can develop their clinical skills and knowledge through a combination of inpatient and outpatient rotations, research opportunities, and specialized training in advanced gastrointestinal procedures.

Fellowship Structure

Each year, the program accommodates one fellowship position, culminating in a total of three fellows. This structured approach allows for personalized mentorship and extensive exposure to a diverse case mix within the community setting. Fellows will participate in inpatient rotations within the main medical center as well as elective rotations at the University of Chicago, with a focus on hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease, and nutrition 1.

Clinical Rotations

The curriculum is carefully crafted to provide a variety of clinical and hospital-based experiences. During the three years of fellowship, fellows will engage in rotations categorized as follows:

• PGY-4: Inpatient GI, Radiology, Outpatient GI, Research.
• PGY-5: Inpatient GI, Nutrition, Hepatology, Outpatient GI, IBD, Pathology.
• PGY-6: Research, Inpatient GI, Motility, Outpatient GI, and optional Advanced Endoscopy, which includes hands-on training opportunities at the attending physician's discretion 4.

Advanced Gastrointestinal Procedures

Fellows will gain proficiency in a range of procedures critical to the field of gastroenterology, including but not limited to esophagogastroduodenoscopies (EGD), colonoscopies, and exposure to specialized techniques such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). The curriculum encourages fellows to pursue advanced endoscopic training in preparation for a potential fourth year focused on interventional endoscopy 4.
