The program emphasizes exposure to all imaging modalities and subspecialties of radiology, including interventional radiology, cardiothoracic imaging, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, pediatric imaging, and women’s imaging. Residents have the opportunity to train at two teaching hospitals - Memorial Medical Center and HSHS St. John's Hospital - both Level 1 Trauma Centers and comprehensive stroke centers.
The program director, Vincent Zata, MD, outlines that residents will have access to high-end procedures and diagnostic studies not typically available elsewhere. The radiology faculty at SIU are board-certified and dedicated to resident education.
For the application process, candidates need to complete the ERAS application including personal statement, photo, medical school and USMLE/COMLEX transcripts, letters of recommendation, Dean's letter, and, if applicable, ECFMG transcript for international medical graduates. The program holds virtual interviews during a specified week.
Residents at SIU have access to various benefits, including a book fund, tuition coverage for educational courses, free catered lunches during conferences, free ACLS courses, covered parking at rotation sites, and days off for educational meetings.
The program offers a hybrid setting, combining private practice with academia, providing residents with balanced exposure and experiences. Residents have the opportunity to develop strong diagnostic and procedural skills while being supported with dedicated research opportunities through the SIU Center for Clinical Research. The program also emphasizes resident well-being and work-life balance.
Overall, the SIU Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program offers a comprehensive training experience with exposure to diverse clinical settings, subspecialties, and educational resources to prepare residents for successful careers in radiology.
