The Stamford Hospital/Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons General Surgery Residency program is ACGME accredited and has been training residents since 1958. They currently have 5 interns and 3 residents per year. The program offers broad training in general surgery and surgical subspecialties such as bariatric, breast, colorectal, pediatric, plastic, thoracic, vascular, surgical oncology, trauma surgery, and surgical critical care.

Residents have access to a wide variety of surgical procedures with no competing fellowships. The program includes rotations at various esteemed institutions like the Connecticut Burn Center, Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, and University of Maryland Institute of Shock Trauma.

The new Stamford Hospital facility, which opened in 2016, provides a holistic approach to patient care. The program emphasizes education, professional development, and research opportunities. Graduates have successfully pursued fellowships at renowned institutions.

Application preferences include passing USMLE Steps I and II on the first attempt with specific minimum score requirements. The residency does not sponsor visas. Interviews are typically held from November through January.
