The University of Central Florida/HCA Florida Healthcare (Ocala) Program in Pensacola is launching a new General Surgery Residency program at HCA Florida West Hospital. This five-year training program aims to equip residents with the skills necessary to diagnose, manage, and operate on a wide range of diseases within the field of surgery. The program, which recently received initial ACGME accreditation, will accept three residents per year for a total of 15 positions and plans to participate in the NRMP and ERAS applications for 2023.
Applicants must be graduates of LCME- or AOA-accredited medical schools. International medical graduates will also be considered. To be eligible, applicants must have completed USMLE Step I and II or COMLEX Step 1 and 2 by July 1, 2022. Virtual interviews will be conducted to select qualified candidates for the program.
Directed by Dr. Sanda Tan, FACS, FASCRS, the program aims to train the next generation of surgeons to meet the healthcare needs of the Pensacola community and the surrounding areas. The program is committed to providing a comprehensive educational experience for its trainees. General Surgery is a competitive specialty, with a high number of applicants vying for limited positions nationally.
The new residency program presents an opportunity for medical school graduates from Florida and across the nation to pursue specialized training in surgery. The UCF/HCA consortium, in collaboration with HCA Florida West Hospital, is dedicated to training competent and compassionate young physicians, with the expectation that many will continue to practice in the community post-residency.
