Program Overview
Emergency Medicine Residency
Sarasota Memorial Hospital
Vision
We aim to train future leaders in emergency medicine — clinicians who pursue excellence, remain motivated throughout their careers, and deliver dignified care to every patient regardless of background or identity.
Mission
The Florida State University Emergency Medicine Residency at Sarasota Memorial Hospital prepares residents with the clinical knowledge, hands‑on procedural training, and diverse patient care experiences needed to deliver high‑quality, compassionate emergency care in any setting. Our program also emphasizes patient safety, resident wellness, and teaching skills to prepare graduates to educate others.
Why train with us
Sarasota provides an exceptional quality of life — beautiful beaches and year‑round outdoor activities. Beyond lifestyle, SMH is a busy, high‑acuity community hospital and is designated as a Level II trauma center. In Florida, the primary distinction between Level I and Level II relates to research participation; our case mix and acuity ensure robust trauma exposure for training.
Although housed in a county hospital, SMH benefits from strong community investment and institutional support. Our system is consistently ranked highly and our nursing staff work in a Magnet‑designated environment with excellent ancillary support. These resources allow residents to concentrate on clinical learning while supported by experienced interdisciplinary teams.
Our residency is academically affiliated with the Florida State University College of Medicine. Residents work with FSU medical students and visiting learners and have access to FSU library and academic resources.
Clinical breadth at SMH is broad: because the hospital does not host many competing specialties, emergency medicine residents perform a wide array of procedures and manage high‑acuity patients directly. Residents gain experience in airway management, sedations, orthopedic reductions, lateral canthotomy, central venous access, dialysis catheter placement, temporary pacing, pericardiocentesis, lumbar puncture, obstetric emergencies, and more. While attendings also care for patients, senior residents are given progressive autonomy — including opportunities to run pods and to learn workflows that include scribes — so graduates are practice‑ready.
A distinguishing feature of our faculty group is that emergency physicians at SMH practice in a small, physician‑owned private group. This provides unique exposure to clinical operations, administration, and business aspects of emergency medicine, which are integrated into our educational program.
About the Program
The FSU College of Medicine Emergency Medicine Residency at Sarasota Memorial Hospital is a community‑based, three‑year training program designed to prepare physicians to practice emergency medicine across diverse settings — including academic medicine, fellowship training, urban and rural community EDs. The program provides exposure to a varied patient population with substantial acuity and broad pathology. Residents have multiple avenues for research, teaching, and leadership development.
#### Program Highlights
* Clinical training is centered in the emergency department under the instruction of board‑certified emergency physicians, minimizing unnecessary off‑service rotations.
* Residents take care of high‑acuity patients from the outset; responsibilities are not artificially restricted by graduated experience policies.
* Each year includes a selective month allowing residents to pursue individualized interests and obtain targeted exposure.
* Resident wellness is prioritized through formal wellness lectures, organized social activities, and access to mental health resources.
* Procedural experience is extensive due to our clinical volume and limited competition from other learners; we emphasize point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS) training and graduates complete a comprehensive POCUS curriculum.
