Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Overview
The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center is a two-year, ACGME-accredited program focused on training fellows for a career in academic and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. This fellowship prepares trainees through a comprehensive curriculum enriched by hands-on clinical experience and dedicated research opportunities.
1Training and Clinical Experience
Fellows will have the privilege to train under eight board-certified cardiac electrophysiologists. This program is held in a large academic medical center that facilitates a robust clinical and research program. Key features include:
- Dedicated training time in four electrophysiology (EP) labs with high procedure volumes, performing more than 1,000 cardiac ablations annually, which includes Atrial Fibrillation and Ventricular Tachycardia procedures.
- Experience with over 1,000 device implantations such as Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) and pacemakers.
- Approximately 100 lead extractions and 130 Left Atrial Appendage closures.
- Engagement in both inpatient and outpatient consultative services.
- Significant research initiatives, including participation in multi-center, industry-sponsored, and investigator-initiated studies.
Research Opportunities
Research is a critical component of the fellowship, and fellows are encouraged to engage in both clinical and translational research projects. There is allocated dedicated research time, and fellows have the opportunity to work with major mapping and ablation systems including CARTO, Precision, and others. Additionally, exposure to investigational devices and collaboration with major device vendors provides a comprehensive research experience.
1Curriculum and Conferences
The educational structure includes weekly didactic conferences, monthly morbidity and mortality (M&M) reviews, and journal clubs. The incorporation of advanced cardiac imaging and pediatric cardiac electrophysiology rotations adds depth to the overall learning experience.
1Application Requirements
Applications for this fellowship are accepted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), beginning July 1. To be considered for review, applicants must ensure that their complete application is submitted by August 5, which includes a recent CV, personal statement, at least three letters of recommendation, USMLE transcripts, a photo, and ECFMG certificate for international graduates.
1Visa and Competitiveness
The program supports visa types such as J-1 visas and may consider specific cases for H-1B visas. The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship is generally considered competitive, accommodating both U.S. graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs), including D.O. applicants.
