Research and Scholarly Activities

Residents are encouraged to engage in research projects that may range from clinical trials to educational innovations. The structure supports longitudinal projects and allows residents to delve into areas pertaining to their clinical interests, thus fostering the development of future research leaders in the field of vascular neurology.

Training Sites

Training occurs primarily at the UNC Medical Center, a comprehensive academic medical institution that includes specialized facilities like the North Carolina Neuroscience Hospital and the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. These facilities host advanced technologies and provide exceptional resources for both inpatient and outpatient neurological care, ensuring residents receive extensive training in a variety of settings 3.

Application Process

Applications to the program are processed through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) using the ERAS system. Key aspects of the application process include:

• Seven residents are accepted each year.
• Applications are reviewed holistically; there is no specific cut-off for USMLE scores. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are welcome, and prior US clinical experience is highly advantageous but not mandatory.
• The program requires three letters of reference and does not necessitate a Chair or Program Director letter.
• Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis with no distinct cutoffs for exam attempts; however, candidates with repeated failures typically appear less competitive 4.

Visa Sponsorship

The program is capable of sponsoring J-1 visas for international medical graduates. All applicants from outside the United States must ensure ECFMG certification to be ranked 5.
