The primary training site for fellows is Sanford's Roger Maris Cancer Center, as well as its affiliated hospitals, which provides a robust clinical training environment. In addition to outpatient rotations at the cancer center, inpatient rounds occur at Sanford Fargo's Broadway hospital, which is transforming into a facility mainly serving cancer patients. The fellowship also includes consultations at Sanford's West Campus hospital and South University Hospital, expanding the clinical experience of the fellows.

3Unique Aspects of the Program
Fellows benefit from an extensive support system comprised of diverse experts including nurse practitioners, specialized nursing staff, and social workers, embedded in a collaborative culture that promotes patient safety and high-quality care. This fellowship emphasizes not only clinical exposure but also academic excellence, fostering a thriving research environment where fellows can gain mentorship and guidance from experienced faculty. Regular specialty tumor boards and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration enhance the educational experience.

As for application requirements, candidates must complete an accredited three-year residency in internal medicine and submit a comprehensive application through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). A minimum of three recommendation letters is mandatory, including one from the internal medicine program director, and candidates must commit to taking the board exams upon successful completion of the fellowship.

The fellowship is highly competitive, with only two fellows accepted each year. The program actively seeks candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to hematology and oncology through their clinical experience and academic background. While the program is primarily geared toward MD graduates, it is also inclusive of DO graduates and international medical graduates (IMGs), widening the pool of potential candidates.
6Program Policies
Policies related to the fellowship include standard benefits for fellows, guidelines on duty hours, fellow supervision, and well-being provisions, ensuring that the work-life balance of fellows is prioritized. These policies are in place to maintain a supportive environment conducive to both professional development and personal well-being.
7Mission and Goals
The mission of the Hematology and Oncology Fellowship program is to educate and mentor future hematology and oncology specialists who will serve rural and local communities effectively. The program also aims to foster research to enhance understanding of hematologic diseases and neoplasms, aligning with the overarching mission of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences, which focuses on educating health professionals and investing in community welfare.
