The fellowship aims to provide both outpatient and inpatient experiences, emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach within the evolving dynamics of cancer care.
Fellowship Structure
This combined program, which leads to board eligibility in both hematology and medical oncology, ensures fellows engage in extensive clinical exposure through dedicated rotations. Fellows dedicate approximately one-fourth to one-third of their training at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, gaining valuable experience with a diverse patient population. This hands-on clinical training is complemented by direct mentorship opportunities with nationally recognized faculty, who are leaders in clinical trials and innovative cancer therapy.
1Rotations
Fellows participate in various essential rotations that allow them to enhance their knowledge base and clinical skills:
- Basic Hematology
- Coagulation
- Blood and Marrow Transplant (both inpatient and outpatient)
- Breast Oncology
- Gastrointestinal Oncology
- Gynecologic Oncology
- Hematology Consults
- Hematology Inpatient
- Non-Transplant Consults at Kansas City VA
- Outpatient Oncology Consults at the VA
- Palliative Care
- Radiation Oncology (KU)
Additionally, there are elective opportunities including various disease-specific clinics and research projects, allowing fellows to tailor parts of their training to their interests. This diversity of clinical exposure is crucial for developing well-rounded physicians suited for the multifaceted nature of oncology care.
1Research Opportunities
A pivotal component of the fellowship is the research track, where fellows can choose among clinical, clinical research, or basic/translational research paths. Each fellow is expected to participate in significant research activities, including writing clinical trial protocols and presenting research findings. Fellowships can involve up to 18 months working closely in a research lab or with clinical trial teams, under the guidance of faculty mentors. The program emphasizes scholarly output, with an expectation of producing at least two manuscripts or presentations by the end of the fellowship.
1Didactics and Conferences
Education is a cornerstone of the fellowship. Fellows regularly attend and are required to participate in various didactic sessions and conferences, including:
- Oncology Journal Club
- Research Conferences
- Basic Science Didactics
- Core Lectures
These structured educational experiences allow fellows to deepen their understanding of both fundamental and cutting-edge topics in hematology and oncology.
1Application Process and Criteria
The application for the fellowship must be submitted via ERAS and requires several key components:

1Competitiveness and Inclusivity
The fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center is regarded as highly competitive, particularly for applicants who are U.S. medical graduates. However, the program has shown inclusivity towards DO graduates and IMGs, recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences these candidates bring. This commitment to diversity enriches the training environment, promoting a comprehensive learning experience.
1Unique Strengths
One of the notable strengths of the program is its affiliation with the University of Kansas Cancer Center, designated as a National Cancer Institute Center. This affiliation provides fellows with opportunities to engage in innovative clinical trials and pioneering research projects that shape the future of cancer treatment. Each track within the fellowship allows for a tailored approach to developing expertise in specific areas of interest, ensuring that all fellows graduate equipped to become leaders in the field.
