The University of South Alabama Pathology Residency Program offers comprehensive training in both anatomic and clinical pathology. Residents have the opportunity to receive specialized training in neuropathology, dermatopathology, pediatric pathology, electron microscopy, and forensic pathology. The program emphasizes scholarly activity, professionalism, and continuous quality improvement in patient care.

The residency program is fully accredited by the ACGME and participates in the NRMP. It supports 13 residency positions and offers a four-year combined anatomic and clinical pathology training program. The first two years focus on a core curriculum, providing a foundation for advanced rotations in the third and fourth years.

International medical graduates applying to the program must have a current ECFMG certificate, J1 visa or permanent resident status, and clinically evaluated U.S. experience.

Residents rotate through various blocks in surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, blood bank, transfusion medicine, hematopathology, clinical chemistry, and clinical microbiology. Educational conferences and lectures cover a wide range of topics in anatomic and clinical pathology to enhance residents' skills and knowledge.

There is no in-house call for pathology residents. Residents take on beeper call rotations with faculty backup. The call schedule includes weekday and weekend shifts, with an approximate frequency of one week in twelve.
