Ascension St John Hospital Program

The Ascension St. John Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program aims to provide high-quality graduate medical education in a supervised and academic atmosphere. The training is designed to prepare resident physicians to practice comprehensive, scientific, safe, and cost-effective Internal Medicine. The program is centered around the core competencies outlined by the ACGME, emphasizing Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, and System-Based Practice.

The internal medicine residency program at Ascension St. John Hospital consists of 21 categorical residents in each academic year, along with 3 preliminary 1-year R1 residents and 3 Chief Residents. Training includes exposure to various internal medicine subspecialties such as Allergy-Immunology, Cardiology, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Palliative Care, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Rheumatology.

The program follows a milestones-based training approach to ensure residents are well-prepared for careers in general internal medicine, hospital medicine, or further subspecialty fellowship training. Faculty play an active role in organizing and implementing the Internal Medicine teaching program, providing a conducive environment for learning.

Ascension St. John Hospital requires applicants to apply through ERAS. The program receives over 3,000 applications annually and interviews approximately 10% of candidates. Selection is based on distinguishing characteristics such as USMLE and COMLEX scores, medical school graduation date, and exceptional attributes and experiences.

Interviews for the 2022-2023 Academic Year will be conducted virtually via the Zoom application. Before the interview day, applicants receive an email with the Zoom meeting link and troubleshooting contact information.
