Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Program

This is the content of the Transitional Residency Program at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, clinically affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center:

• Program Overview: The program has been running since 1974, producing talented residents generation after generation. It is a 216-bed, not-for-profit, community teaching hospital with a very diverse patient population and a busy emergency department, providing abundant learning opportunities. The training emphasizes general competencies and encourages early independence and responsibility under the supervision of a diverse group of medical professionals.

• Program Environment: The program fosters camaraderie, teamwork, and community both within and outside the hospital. There is a sense of connectedness as some medical staff who were once residents have returned to the hospital in various departments. The program has adapted well to the duty hour requirements with no overnight call and no night float system thanks to a hospitalist coverage model.

• Education Opportunities: Various educational activities offered include regular subspecialty lectures, a critical care lecture series, Grand Rounds, Tumor Board Conference, M&Ms, Journal Clubs, and bedside teaching.

• Application Process: The program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). They offer 9 PGY-1 positions and are fully accredited by the ACGME. • Curriculum: The schedule consists of 12 blocks or rotations over the academic year, including Internal Medicine, Critical Care, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Ambulatory Medicine, and elective rotations which can be done at affiliated programs. Research electives are also supported.

• Program History: The founder of the teaching program was Dr. Burton J. Polansky, and the current Program Director is Dr. Henry J. Grazioso. Dr. Grazioso also serves as the Director of Medical Education. The Coordinator of the Transitional Year Residency is Bridgett A. Bishop, who brings extensive clinical and administrative healthcare experience to the program.
