East Alabama Medical Center Program

The Psychiatry Residency Program at East Alabama Medical Center is designed to deliver a comprehensive and practical educational experience grounded in patient care. The mission of the program is to prepare psychiatry residents to provide exemplary care characterized by empathy, respect, and collaboration both with patients and within multidisciplinary teams. The training emphasized not only includes clinical skills but also fosters an environment of continuous learning and introspection.

Program Structure

The residency is structured over four years, progressively increasing in complexity and responsibility:

PGY-1

During the first year, residents complete a total of 12 months of rotations comprising 6 months of adult inpatient psychiatry, 4 months of internal medicine (both inpatient and outpatient), and 2 months of neurology. All these rotations take place at the East Alabama Medical Center along with the Internal Medicine Residency outpatient clinic, providing a solid grounding in general medical care alongside psychiatric training.

PGY-2

The second year includes varied rotations lasting between 2 to 3 months in subspecialty areas such as child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, community psychiatry, substance abuse, and consultation psychiatry. These experiences are provided at East Alabama Medical Center, the Integrea Community Mental Health Center, and the Opelika Addiction Center. The completion of an emergency psychiatry rotation offers opportunities for moonlighting, contingent on the resident's medical licensure.

PGY-3

In the third year, the focus shifts entirely to outpatient psychiatry. This involves consecutive months spent at East Alabama Psychiatric Services and the Auburn University Student Counseling Center, allowing residents to deepen their understanding of outpatient care.

PGY-4

The final year reintroduces inpatient settings, with residents assuming leadership roles, teaching, and mentoring responsibilities. This year consists of two months of adult psychiatry, two months of consultation psychiatry, and eight months of elective time, fostering independence and exploration of specific areas within psychiatry.

Curriculum and Didactics

The curriculum of the residency adheres to ACGME educational objectives, promoting relevant and immediately applicable knowledge. Didactic sessions are synchronized with clinical rotations. For instance, lectures on adult psychopathology are taught alongside adult unit rotations, while topics on child and adolescent psychiatry correspond with the relevant rotation in PGY-2. The program features a mixture of small group learning and larger assemblies such as Journal Club and Grand Rounds that involve all years. Topics evolve through the residency, with early years focusing on diagnosis and treatment, transitioning into complex systems of care in the later years. Field trips to various sites enhance discussions around compassion, diversity in patient care, and social accountability.

Application Process

For applicants interested in the residency, the process includes submitting materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Required documents include a curriculum vitae, personal statement, official transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Notably, the program does not support J1 visa applications and demands an ECFMG certificate for international graduates. Minimum passing scores on USMLE or COMLEX examinations are necessary qualifications for entry.

The program is recognized as having a competitive application process, welcoming DO and IMG candidates but maintaining a rigorous selection based on demonstrated qualifications and experience. PGY-1 residents have a starting salary of $60,000, which increases yearly to $64,000 by PGY-4.
